@Wulfshead, that info is brilliant. I've screen shotted it and bunged it into my 'to do' folder. I'm not sure I'll ever go to those lengths, I'm too busy with work and my family to take on a hobby so time consuming. But I might start collecting the bits of kit meantime.

@Briggs 2.0, @Bongo: the SDR antenna sounds excellent. Cheap too! But would you say that it's a better option than the £24 boefang? I was thinking about buying it just as a toy when when I go camping next. If I got two, would we be able to use them as walkie talkies while mountain walking and camping? Or would we need a licence for that? Or just to make SOS if I had a heart attack in the middle of Snowdon?

@Bongo, Would you say I'll be able to get the baofang working easy enough? The set up looks incredibly complicated.
