Myself I will be trying to keep the power going for as long as possible. I have a solar charging deep cycle batttery pack which will currently power lights, keep communications eqipment charged and maybe run low wattage tools. I'm always thinking of boosting system so it will run more. My reasons for this are as follows:
Self generated electricity is a much cleaner and safer source of power-electric lights much safer than candles, similarley a electric powered hear source is safer in the sceme of things than a fire. Plus there are things now that our forefathers of 200 years ago didn't have or requre such as refrigeration for medicines.
The ability to charge devices such as MP3/DVD players maybe even mobile phones may become a real tradeable commodity in the future if there are brownouts....or domestic electricity becomes restricted.

I don't have a genny...a decent one is out of my price range and the noise of a genny would attract too much attention. My next major purchase would be a wind turbine. If I did posess a genny then It's priority use would be for Power tools, But I belive that it would be be requisitioned at best to keep the local hospital running at worst to become the property of some freudal/criminal overlord with a badge and some kind of authority.

Each to their own, i'm prepared to survive without electricity but untill that day comes i'll try my hardest to keep the lights on.

I would expect for everyone to prep for off grid power solutions first and only as last resort go powerless.

Firstly because electrical lighting is safer then candles/fire as well as rechargeable, candles run out. The sun/manual winding does not.
Secondly if something occurs you will want to preserve calories and food stocks so removing as much manual work as possible would be advantageous.
Third is power can provide the creature comforts, music, communication, some continuation of life as normal...
Having stored power also allows for a longer period to hunker down, fires produce smoke and require collecting wood.

I have candles, will make fires for cooking/heat once the gas goes but see no reason to use the hardest solution first.
Hope for the best, prep for the worst and keep it need to know.

To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day, one month or even one year - but for a lifetime.

I think that last sentence said it all!
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Do not rely on the mobile phone net work , most cells have a limited battery back up of less than 1 hr, only the key sites have back up generators and there are about six in these islands according to my source.

Most mobile phones aren't just phones though, they're camera's, torches, music systems etc etc so might be useful if you can keep them powered.

If you buy them to use them as a torch you're absolutely right mate, ;) if you've got one though and its got all these other abilities then why not use them. They're pretty easy to charge too, whether its a spare battery, a stand alone power charger or even solar. I've got books, music, videos, all sorts of stuff that could keep me amused. Handy wee things to have when you're bored, even without the internet. :D

If the mobile phone network is down there is a chance that the GPS will be down as well. or turned off by the owners of the system or degraded.
