Been pike fishing today. Took me stove, and did a fry up between fish. I found a can of princes bacon grill. 2012 was the date. Missed that one! It was fine. :D

The date on tins is just a Best Before date after which the manufacturer doesn't like to guarantee the contents will retain the same quality of taste and flavour. That's all it is, a guarantee of original quality; the product will still be quite safe to eat, (unless, as has already been said the tin is rusty or has blown.) Yes, of course do sniff and taste tests; we do that all the time on everything we consume anyway (I hope!)

Manufacturers are quite happy for us to be mislead into thinking food should be thrown out once it reaches a certain date; it increases their sales no end if we chuck out and replace regularly.

As a general guide stick to "Use By" dates but ignore "Best Before".

I notice Tesco even put a date on when apples should be consumed by, and throw them out when they're past that date. :x

Agreed!! I  when I see a best before date on salt!!! Ain't nothin gonna live in that stuff to make it go out of date, same with honey and sugar. As long as its stored properly I.e not damp for sugar or salt it will be fine, honey may crystallise but gentle warming sorts that out.

Not in a tin but last week we came across a packet of jerky that had " got lost" in a cupboard. It was still sealed so I decided to just try it . It was a little dryer than when first brought but still tasty , beef marinated in Worcester sauce and made by Martin's Jerked Meats. No reaction to the sample so in the following couple of days the rest of the packet disappeared.
The date , by the way , was a use by date of June 2010.

We're currently munching through boxes of chocolate chip brunch bars, best before June 2014, just as crunchy as they normally are. Son moved them behind a box in the stock cupboard so they missed rotation
