Two problems with piriton emergency iv use.
First it is prescription only and second it is amazingly expensive 10mg ampoules x 5 are approx £30.
The price used to be much lower but there is a trick that manufacturers use to raise prices so the price went up about 5 fold a few years ago. Same thing happened to a few other commonly used drugs. A pharmacist friend told me how it works, apparently they produce a branded product which they charge whatever they like for. They buy up and shut down the generic producer but are able to say "anyone can make it if they want" problem is no one does. It more complicated than that but apparently it is "legal".
Add in a shelf life of usually less than 2 years and you get the problem.

The Competition and Markets Authority (the “CMA”) announced on 12 February
2016 that it has fined GlaxoSmithKline plc (“GSK”) and certain suppliers of generic
medicines for entering into anti-competitive agreements for the supply of paroxetine

Re: Medicine List
That does happen, maybe a tad more complicated than that though lol. Drug companies are allowed a license period where only they can sell their new drug under brand name to recoup costs of bringing the drug to market. Each drug takes millions to get to market!Appin wrote:Two problems with piriton emergency iv use.

Some companies, in my experience, will produce lots of a drug and stockpile bumping up price as availability falls, then flood the market again enjoying the price hype for a few months.
It can literally be a drug you can normally get for 30p a box goes up to £50 a box within a couple months!

Nope it can be bought over the counter with no issues, they may well ask if you have used it before or what other meds your on but it's cool to buy, tastes ike shit but does work well when i used to use but can't use it now due to other problems.BadgerSE wrote:The only reason morphine isn't on the list is its not an over the counter drug is it?

Re: Medicine List
I last bought this kind of stuff 5 years ago and it was the nuts, but as i say that was 5 years ago.ParamedicPrepper wrote:Kaolin and morphine is a bit old school if you like. There are plenty of other OTC meds that will work just as well or better.
Well that is an issue for them they have no legal right to refuse you unless they suspect you will abuse it, if that is the case then just move to the next pharmcy, IMO given ANY situation you are prepping for i think it's best to find the best products that work for you and your loved ones, so try them out now/easter/crimbo whenever but find the best one to suit you then stock up on that one, at least you will know it works for you.ParamedicPrepper wrote:Plus you can get some dodgy looks buying from a pharmacy as if left to settle you can siphon off the morphine and a certain clientelle would abuse it.
Agreed it is VERY expensive for what you get but having sufferd with migraines since i was 7 (now erm lets say 49ParamedicPrepper wrote:Imigran is relatively new OTC but very effective. Quite expensive and does come with horrible side effects. Generally take it feel like you are dying 30 mins later sleep for an hour and you are fixed lol generally speaking. You also have to answer certain questions to be able to purchase (in good pharmacies anyway)
In my case it was in case more on the lines of a mild reaction, so i guess loratadine or cetirizine would be good for us, i presume it's a case of taking one a day when the symptons come on, not now and forever?ParamedicPrepper wrote:If it is long acting hayfever relief or animal allergy thwn loratadine or cetirizine one a day would work fine. It is non drowsy unlike piriton and only one a day. Works best when taken regular everyday

Just thought Hydrocortisone cream could be an option as well, we always have that for bites etc.

Yes fast acting for acute reaction piriton. Long term hayfever say late march through october take loratadine or cetirizine once a day. Some years are worse than others. Some years i can not leave house without taking everyday as i feel like i am dying! Other years dont take at all!

Re: Medicine List
Not sure if it's available over the counter but I have Rizatriptan on prescription for migraine the brand name is maxelt melts, they're like little crumbly tablets that dissolve on your tongue, they usually make me sleep though, feel much better when I wake up.
I also found low dosage antidepressant for a month worked to break the cycle of them.

Looking at the name i presume they are part of the "triptan" lines bit like my Imigran (Sumatriptan) the Imigran can be bought in 50MG over the counter but you have to go through a few questions to get it and it costs a bomb but wonderfull drugs for true migrainspreparedsurrey wrote:Not sure if it's available over the counter but I have Rizatriptan on prescription for migraine the brand name is maxelt melts, they're like little crumbly tablets that dissolve on your tongue, they usually make me sleep though, feel much better when I wake up.
