Hi,
firstly that kit is pretty dammed good for the price- go get one or two or three :)

about time that guidance material is put out into tourniquets and heamostatics, used correctly they are amazing pieces of kit.

anyone training should be up to date with new techniques, its essential but some people dont like change.

The role of the first aider has way developed from basic abc's now to near ambulance training, and its a good thing when used in conjunction with proper training- not learn yourself on youtube, if it goes tits up and you find yourself in court you wont win and you may face jail or financial ruin.

with that said I like youtube for learning, but not alone- get trained up.

as part of my job I am often part of the trauma team and get to use some ace kit and work along side some amazing people, but it is literally life or death.

as for splinting the most basic form of analgesia for a fracture is splinting, it provides stability in the injury and psychologically helps you deal with it and reminds you not to wiggle it around as it will hurt again :P

talking of splinting SAM's are ace, but if you have a mass casualty rtc for example how do you splint them all, goes back to basics and triangular bandages.
In a SHTF situation I am looking at a new cheep material which is water resistant and lightweight and normally used as an under floor barrier called equinox i think its brilliant and can be cut with scissors in any shape or size. I will report more on this in the next few days.
Splinting is good, very good so do it, in a SHTF situation it could mean the difference from failure.

look forwards to seeing your med kit, I will tell you about mine :)
keep the messages coming all good.

Is there any way of getting hold of Hydrocortisone if the S hits the F? I think not, but because I'm a prepper I need to know for sure  . (Addisons disease)

unfortunately the short answer is NO.

the hydrocortisone you require would be intravenously and that has to be prescribed, and administered by trained professionals, if given incorectly, as other medications you could get speed shock and die.

In a SHTF situation best bet find an ambulance station/ambulance or doctors surgery/emergency unit and hope there's someone there who can cannulate you and give you the I.V.

sorry.

So, basically, if you're diabetic when SHTF you're dead. *gulp*

From this website.https://www.trumanlibrary.org/histday/i ... sulin.html

"With no effective treatment aside from a semi-starvation diet, a diabetic's outlook appeared grim. Before 1922, diabetic children rarely lived a year after diagnosis, five percent of adults died within two years, and less than 20 percent lived more than ten (Berger 57). Untreated diabetics faced blindness, loss of limbs, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack and death (Yuwiler 12)."

We tend to forget that without modern medicine and practices, the mortality rate would return to that of the pre 1900's, for a time at least. I can't see all our modern knowledge being lost forever, but it may take a while to get things going again and I suspect you would have to pay dearly.

Sethorly, unfortunately without your insulin yes eventually.

In a SHTF situation those with chronic illnesses requiring medications to survive will die before people with no illnesses.
I will explain why, ones body in a normal situation requires for example insulin to perform daily functions. and that is with good regulation/monitoring of glucose levels, adequate food and fluids and also making sure any infections are dealt with appropriately.

Now SHTF has happened, you do ok for a few days but have no more insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, you pee more, getting dehydrated, become weak and thirsty, eventually you go into a coma, develop multi system failure and die slowly if not treated with insulin and fluids, this can only be done in a hospital or care facility with the correct staff and equipment, normally these patients would go to intensive care.
In a SHTF situation there is no ITU.

so get a stash of your medication to give you the best chance, also you need food to survive.
On another look the diabetic is also at very serious risk from cuts getting infected due to ? neuropathy, worst case you get cut, no treatment blood sugars elevate because of infection, necrosis then sepsis then dead.

all reasons to prepare and ensure your condition, what ever it is, is under as much control as possible. attend all appointments, dont lie at them as it only impedes you and your health.

any more questions I can help you with :)

I'm not diabetic. But I'm halfway through a large packet of Liquorice Allsorts so I'll probably get there soon.

the funny thing about diabetes is that type 1- insulin requiring is normally ideopathic, ie we dont know. However type 2 is due to lifestyle, however having loads of sugar does not cause diabetes, no matter what our mums and aunties used to say :P

I'm type two, it saved my life, the random blood tests found CML which is under control too ;) but as you've touched on and not just for me 3 out of 5 in our house have EDS, 2 need an array of meds, no NHS = big issues.

Good thread by the way :)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
