I watched a program many many years ago that had 4 doctors/scientists on it and they did diferrent experiments each week.

I remember that Graham Garden was one of the hosts. One week they had a woman with really long red hair and they said she hadn't washed it for a month. She came out with a towel wrapped round her head and at the end of the show they removed the towel.

Her hair was absolutely stunning and they explained that, as you rightly said, it cleans itself. The first couple of weeks can be a bit minging but stick with it and it is will be worth the wait.

I doubt our ancestors had access to much Jojoba back in the day and they didn't do too badly.
