She had a pantry which was cold, and kept milk in jugs and bottles by standing them in a butler skink of shallow cold water, with towelling draped over them, this wicked the cold water round the jug or bottle and kept it cold.
Meat was simply kept in an old metal meat safe or covered in mutton cloth or muslin. It was also cooked quickly.
However, these poor ladies had to visit the shops almost every day to get fresh food. But they were lucky to have local shops on every high street/corner etc.

I have 2 freezers and a fridge/freezer which I rely on heavily. All are full at the beginning on the month (milk, bread rolls, maragarine, meats, some processed foods (which I hate to say but OH can't cook so when hes on tea duty its a case of just heating it up!! ;) ) homemade cakes , stewed apple (loads) and veg.
I would be very worried if the power went out at the beginning of the month.
I need to find an alternative way of storing my monthly shop. :?

My mum never had a fridge in her life, nevermind a freezer. She managed ok. We are brain-washed now into thinking that we must have this and must have that. We could manage ok without them, it's just nicer to have them that's all. I'm quite a long way from a shop but I could do without my freezer. Using tins, packets, UHT milk or dried milk for cooking. I got a second freezer cheap on Gumtree but all that's in it is bread flour and steamed carrots  I don't like to rely on something that might go off.

They also didn't work the same as many ladyfolk do these days, not that they were ladies of leisure, but the man went out and earned, his wife kept house.

Och hey guys....remember, this is Scotland, and the Highlands to boot. Not only did these women work...in gran`s case, full time crofting and a servant part time in the `big house` as well as caring for grandad! But there were no local shops anywhere nearby! A largish monthly shop took place but of course perishables tended to come straight from the croft (house cow, pigs, sheep and hens etc) so they learned to preserve without electric. I.E preserving eggs in buckets of waterglass. ;)
Gran would have been chuffed to be called a lady, and she certainly was in the truest sense of the word, but oh boy, she worked pretty hard all her life. :D

We love the freezer, but we tend now to keep it for mere convenience, our main food storage being tinned dried and preserved. Also the garden supplies a lot of our fresh food.we do have a big gennie to power the freezer in a power cut so the food is not wasted. In fact I would sooner give it away than have it rot.
