If you're using a Trangia indoors with the door open, make sure there's nothing flammable for at least a couple of feet around. Because the flame can blow sideways in a draught. I think they burn a bit stronger once they get going properly.
Crikey! Good to know!

I discovered this cooking in the porch of my highly flammable tent. Needless to say I was rather startled.

I did a stress test this weekend. Trangia was part of it. We stood it on the top of the stove,as it is Simple methylated spirit. It’s not like ,say, putting a volcano stove in the house - yes that has happened! :o
I had to google what a volcano stove was - apt name! I'd be the one who lost their eyebrows with something like that

I haven't used my trangia for a very long time. I must try it out this week while I'm off work.

Jansman, I saw in another post that you have a Kelly kettle. Is that something that can also be used indoors (with care obviously), or definitely outdoor use only?
No! It’s a volcano stove! OUTSIDE! A great piece of kit, and one I have used for years. 1 litre of HOT water in 3.5 minutes. Great!

Bullocks! You can use it indoors. Keep the kitchen window open . You don’t use them in tents cos they are made of fu** ing curtains! Dear god!

Ah. When I googled volcano stove, I got something that looked like a much higher powered (and scary!) version of the spirit burner in a trangia. Now I know :)

This has been a hot topic in our household over the last couple of months.
- oil heating but have wood burner in lounge with plenty of wood for the year and next.
-electric oven & hob -=camp cooker with gas bottle, BBQ with gas bottle, clay oven, fire pit with grill so plenty of alternatives.
-kettle= keep flasks filled for during the day but also have a Kelly kettle and a kettle for camping stove.
- lighting = huge selection of camping lamps, head torches and other various torches plus 2 oil lamps as a last resort.

We have also just ordered an Anker 'big ass battery' and solar panel to charge up batteries, phones, torches and to power the CCTV.

This has the Potential to be a huge topic..,

Things to prep for
.economic

no electric no work ....

No petrol pumps

Loss of cash machines / loss of card payment

just because there's power in Tesco has your bank's payment system either got power or has the interweb got a sustainable link / power as it passes through an area with no power

Travel... no power no trains / signals.... Traffic light and traffic management not working (smart motorways :? :? :? )

So you've got grub you've got home... Has the water board got the pumps running for both fresh water and sewage / storm water pumps in some areas storm / top water gets pumped into the river / watercourses ...

So you've got home it's dark not a street light in sight

Now you've got to find the key hole ..... And get into the house....

I've a solar PIR porch light ...

So you've got in avoided falling over the cat and ermmm it's dark and quiet......

I've got a pile of lights be it lanterns , torches, head torches , batteries camping gaz / kerro lanterns so that's the lights sorted....
Fridge is off so is the freezer..... Spare blankets to drape over then ..... Be sure to remove immediately the power comes back on....

Turn everything off especially computers etc the inrush reconnect surge can cause damage

Alternative cooking?

Got a battery radio ?

And a battery alarm clock?

So it's cold have you got access to alternative heating / warm clothing / extra blanket for the bed hot water bottles?

If it's dark think about security ensure everything is secured solar / battery lighting might be a good deterrent likewise battery shed alarms etc
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
