I checked Nukemap and an online map measuring software to find the distance from my house to the nearest military base. Assuming Russia will use Topol missile, I am outside moderate blast damage radius, but within light blast damage radius (windows expected to break, so I cannot use the house as a fallout shelter). So, my house won't be safe from radiation fallout, I must move...
Another thing is that my daughter studies very close to the military base that I assume to be the epicentre. I don't know if I be able to start the vehicle as the electromagnetic wave may destroy electrical parts, but the car is Faraday cage, maybe it will start, someone who knows please advice here... I know I will have to travel to the epicentre if this happens. It is half an hour trip on a car, probably an hour on a pushbike... While the radiation may seem not too high in the first hour, I will will increase rapidly. And I don't have protective equipment except a gas mask. Think my daughter will have a chance for survival - I looked at Nukemap and number of staff on the military base and it assumes about 30-40% fatalities rate
Seems to me I will have to hope that the local authorities will evacuate my wife while I try to find my daughter
Is there a cheap way to build a good shelter to survive the first hit? Now the UK government tested the emergency signalling to mobile devices, we may have about 5 minutes warning before the missiles start raining.
Is there a need to protect car from electromagnetic wave? And what is a cheap option to do it quickly? I do not intend covering the car with a metal net all the time or keeping in the garage, just try doing something at the last moment, and it should be quick - maybe it will be during the night, so time will be limited. I have a large capacity scooter, maybe I could protect it instead of the car?
About iodine tablets - they require time building up in the body, so should be taken in advance, so there is still good chance of catching a lot of radiation. However, I spoke to a friend who was a volunteer in Chernobyl after the disaster and keeps working there since then, he said I should not be worried about this too much because ... he does not want to explain

Iodine thing first... It's mostly an issue for the young who take in more iodine which stays in their bodies a long time. It's a slow life time reducer. Us crusties can just take the hit.
Car and emp... Who knows. But at best journey times might be much longer. As for preemptively moving home. Short of buying a croft in the Highlands it's a tough call.
