Robot mower ?
Probably cost the same as bags of bark/chippings etc and it takes the aggro out of maintaining a lawn.

Definitely not interested in a robot mower.

But I might need that allotment if things continue to go to custard!

I did see a robot mower at lidl for 200 quid.

I tried a wildflower meadow and it just looked a bit rubbish most of the time. I put it back to grass seed. Creeping thyme looks good for a bit and then it gets bald patches.

Clover is a nice alternative to lawn. Less or zero mowing depending how short you wanted it. It can be a bit tricky with barefoot children playing in the summer due to bees....but it's also good for the bees and will do your soil good if you ever did decide to grow food on the space instead

One snag with bark someone mentioned to me is that cats may use it as kitty litter. But they used to go on my lawn until a neighbour moved away.

Cats will use anything that's easy to dig to do their business so yes they will use the bark but is it really a problem ? Apart from a bit of weeding it's not as if you spend much time with your hands in it. Personally I'm more in favour of bark than gravel for instance. It's a natural product , well gravel.is too but it requires quarrying or dredging , and will rot down and need topping off periodically but it's also kinder when it migrates onto grass. It's irritating at the very least to hit gravel with the mower and can be hazardous when that gravel is shot out at speed.
My own garden is a mixture , bit of grass , fruit trees , veg patches , compost heaps , sheds , log stores and storage areas of building materials , scaffolds , scrap and so on. It's hardly what one could call a picture postcard type of garden but it works for us...

I'm not too concerned about cats. They don't come out the front much anyway, too dangerous. Also, they don't come in my back garden as much as they used to. Next door had two, and she moved away. New neighours in a few houses. One feral one's probably died, or been rescued. I used to feed it occasionally.
