Anybody reading this would conclude that flu “causes” an average of 12,000 deaths a year in the UK. Sometimes even higher figures are quoted, up to 25,000 deaths a year. But in fact all we can say for certain is that flu causes a few tens of deaths a year, and is associated with a few thousand: in recent years, considerably fewer than 12,000.
Well, yeah - for 'ordinary' flu, but we're talking about a pandemic here which causes a whole lot more deaths/hospitalisations as you can see in the column next to the one you marked. I'm not bothered so much about 'ordinary' flu (I've had the vaccine anyway) but pandemics are a whole different kettle of tripe. If there is one (or when?) it probably won't be covered by the vaccine, will be more dangerous, and probably need different preparations. Although what exactly those will be we don't seem to be too sure on ;)

Yeah it’s an S10, I’m not sure if it’s a sealing issue or whether I’m just not wearing it correctly but there is a bit of leakage under the chin to the right. Serves me right really for being a cheapskate, picked it up at a local army surplus shop for about £15. I’ll still keep it though, even as it is, it must be better than nothing, especially against the things your most likely to encounter such as smoke.

Filters, here we go;

10 X british army surplus respirator filter issued unused, £29.99 +£8 P&P
2 available / 1 sold.

£3.79 each, bargin that mate :D

I got spare filters from Ebay, or Strikeforce supplies/surplus.

They are a standard thread size for cannisters from many countries, except the US iirc.

You can also get an extension tube for the filters to be remote from the mask and for fitting assorted medical equipment such as used for bagging a patient.

Not had a problem when I have checked the families masks for leakage.
Thank you!

Aye, the difference is that it is often a"novel" virus, as was the H1N1 back in 1918, the swine flu virus a few years back was a Pandemic strain and in the UK was the cause of about 600 extra deaths, still nowhere near the 12,000 figure used for seasonal flu which used to be rolled out year on year.
It could thus be argued that the swine flu pandemic killed as many people in England and Wales in a single year (342) as seasonal flu has in the past nine years (358). This comparison is invalid because surveillance was much more intense during the swine flu pandemic, and more deaths occurred in younger people, making them easier to identify. However, it is more accurate than comparing the UK figure of 457 with 12,000.

I am trying to remember which year the specialists got it wrong and they used the wrong vaccine mix, so people were not covered by the vaccine. I think it was 2003.

So, are you saying (gnole) that there's no real need to worry about a pandemic? Can I go off and find something else to worry about instead? (gawd knows it should be fairly easy to find summat!)

1, Do you have the ability to completely isolate you and your household from the outside world for 12 weeks?

2, Do you have to go out to work to pay the bills?

3, Do you have enough food for 12 weeks without leaving the house.

4, If you do go out do you feel that you need to wear a full protective suit including face protestion?

5, have you the ways and means to create a dirty room /clean room where indoor and outdoor life is swapped?

If you can answer yes or no to the appropriate questions above I guess that "you" don't have any worries about catching the virus and can stop worrying, but stepping out of the home, and even staying in it, everyday carries some level of risk, do the assessment, there are far more things to prioritise over when prepping, get it covered properly and your preps will cover you for pretty much everything that life can and will throw at you for "X" amount of time.

"X" being how long your stores and finances will allow.

Hi Itsy. It's hard if you have to go to work and mix with people there, easier for folk like me. All the precautions in the world won't help when air-conditioning kindly spreads everybody's germs all round the building, and short of stopping breathing there's not a lot you can do eh  If it was something bad like H5N1 then I think people would wear face masks as in Japan.

I'm going to be completely honest here and admit I have no specific plans. As I work from home though, I could pretty much isolate myself for an extended period. If I had to mingle with others the face mask, alcohol gel and wipes would come out. About all you can do if you have to mingle is create a barrier and exersise scrupulous hygiene(which we all know about anyway)

Please bear in mind though if you are using the surgical type face masks that you see people wearing in japan you will need a good supply. Once you start breathing into them they will get damp and become ineffective, so they will need changing regulary. :)
