mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are used by some. I don't have the finance at the moment so store it in the dark and dry.

But surely sugar can't go off anyway as it's a preservative? As long as its kept dry.

mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are used by some. I don't have the finance at the moment so store it in the dark and dry.
Same here, on the plus side the cheapo tesco Rice (30p/kg) has a BB of 2013 so it gives you some leeway before you need to think of better storage options

I buy that too CC. I did buy a BIG bag from Lidl back at the beginning of the year that had a date of 2014 on it. It would last us a month if we ate it every day ..... :D .

we are a big family so space is at a premium,
i was looking at long dated items for a store an forget type thing,2013/2014,

we have 2 lofts so was going to use the smaller one,which the one i want to use isnt boarded so got to do that when funds allow so i can spread the weight.

Under bed storage is good, the bottom of wardrobes, under kitchen cupboards behind the base boards are all areas that can be utilised. Also look up, how much wasted space do you have above the doors - could you put in shelves there?
If you use your loft remember to keep an eye open for vermin (mice etc).
I have extra wide hallways (property was originially built for a wheelchair user) so one of the hallways has wooden shelving all the way down one wall which is my food storage which is hidden with a thin curtain. Still room to walk down. Sometimes for storage you have to think outside the box :D (pardon the pun!)

behind kick boards is good idea
only one wooden wardrobe which is full
an understairs in narrow hall way has dog crate :lol:

i prefer out of sight as it wont get seen/used ;)

Can people recommend what foods I should be prepping with if short on space. How do you work out how much is needed or shall I just try to save as much as possible. Also obviously when something has a best before date but no use by date, can I take it that there is no use by fate as long as it is stored well?

Here's a link to a list that has mostly withstood criticism. For wrinkles, read the whole thread.

If something has a best before date, but no use by date, be guided by common sense. The fact that there is no use by date doesn't mean it will last forever! After the best before date, it will deteriorate in quality. How far that deterioration progresses towards poison; well, that's anyone's guess, and if you are hungry enough, you will probably risk it. Smell, taste and eat test a little first, wait 8 hours, and if there is no ill effect, it may be safe to eat the rest.

I've always gone on the principle of "store what you eat, eat what you store" i.e. if we don't normally eat it we don't store it, and we've always rotated it so nothing is that old. I haven't bothered to store anything in secret or in hidey holes or caches, house isn't that big anyway so everything tinned is kept in the "pantry" (TBH we eat mostly fresh anyway, tinned stuff amounts to 2 or 3 tins a week sometimes less), frozen is in one of two freezers, 1 is the general stuff and the other is the MEAT freezer-we buy from local butchers and farm shops-we don't eat supermarket meat and haven't for nearly 15 years.
