Back 2002 I bought 6 gold sovereigns. I sold them back to the same coin dealer in 2007 (http://www.chards.co.uk/). They had pretty much doubled in price. I made £500 profit.
I still have a handful of silver coins, specifically the very widely traded Maria Theresa Thaler (pronounced Dolar). An Austrian coin minted for over 200 years and probably still widely accepted throughout N. Africa and the Mid East, or indeed by anyone who knows about silver coins. Each contains 3/4 ounce of silver. They are worth about £15 to £20 each at the moment. I got a quote for £22.70 to buy singles recently.
MTT is probably a better coin to have a few of in the UK than say the US silver dollar, as there are probably far fewer Chinese fakes of the MTT washing around. It has a complex edge so it's harder to forge...

UK silver coins minted before 1920 are sterling silver (92.5% silver). I purchased mine from a local coin dealer and paid just little over the published price of silver for that day. He culls out the sterling coins from what he is given and as they are worn they are worthless as coins, their only value is as silver so he normally sells them to a bullion dealer by weight as scrap and so was happy to sell to me.
^This is another good way to go silver-wise in the UK.
You want a reputable coin for investment, with a low mark-up on the silver spot price - for investment. And coins that are in relatively small denominations - for trade.
= MTT or GB sterling coins.
