Re: Being watched.
It always freaks me out when i leave camp at night to take a pee and then look back at the camp site and fire.
You realise you could be surrounded by 200 people watching from the shadows but you wouldnt know as the blackness of the night in the woods and the crackle of the fire cover everything.
Having a dog helps a little but not when he alerts to something and you cant see what it is!
Eeeek
Survivalist?
Re: Survivalist?
dont think you are right there, maybe near the cities but, i could take you to places around my area, and we arent exactly far from "civilisation", where you wouldnt see people for weeks at a time.tfish wrote:
i wouldnt say you are ever far from another person even in the countryside in england.
Re: Survivalist?
A lot of devon is very busy in summer but not all areas, the coasts and south hams etc are packed solid but some parts of mid and north Devon are very quiet even at the height of the holiday season
Re: Survivalist?
most of the traffic is around the coasts, go into the countryside and its empty, i think a lot of the problem is people have to be entertained these days, especially on holiday!

Reminds me of that poem by Wordsworth:buttystella wrote:I was walking in Wharnclife woods on the outskirts of Sheffield when i stumbled on a couple of teenagers mating, best way to put it, i moved away quietly and they were no wiser to my noticing them.
"I've wondered the hills, and along the river banks,
Where I once trod on a fella's bum, and a woman shouted thanks."
Be lucky (and naughty)
Re: Survivalist?
We have a guy camping in the woods near me. I suspect he is homeless, but he is well concealed and seems to know his stuff-nice and tidy etc. I only noticed him 'cos he comes out of the copse first thing same time(Real Early)as I cycle to work.
He has picked the right place as there is a bore-well on the edge, and judging by the wear on the grass round it he knows it is there too.

In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

very true and couple that this human mentality:bulldogeagle wrote:most of the traffic is around the coasts, go into the countryside and its empty, i think a lot of the problem is people have to be entertained these days, especially on holiday!
But many homeless people don't, they sleep in groups under bridges or in graveyards, involved in drink/drugs/crime/domestic violence and cash converters.
and i think there is still a lot of scope to remain hidden even in England's over populated sprawl. In a SHTF situation, the fact people like company and need each other for entertainment and support and how humans have a herding mentality I recon if careful we should still be able to find quiet corners to hole up in should the need arise.

you never said a truer word PP, in a SHTF situation i'm going for total isolation until everything settles down.PreppingPingu wrote:very true and couple that this human mentality:bulldogeagle wrote:most of the traffic is around the coasts, go into the countryside and its empty, i think a lot of the problem is people have to be entertained these days, especially on holiday!

I grew up on a farm which had quite a lot of woodland, I've never had any fear of it and I remember fondly being a 14 years old, shooting rabbits in clearings and cooking them under the stars with my cousins over the summer holidays.
There are a few cases of homeless people living in the woods, I know the year before last they found one dead (over dosed), it was know locally he was living there but as he didn't bother anyone people let him be.
