I went to Go Outdoors today to spend over £200 on kit and they were most unhelpful and my Go Outdoors card had expired and they said I needed to buy a new one- so I said bye. I they went to my local shop who gave me 20% discount as I was Dofe and very helpful!

Never again!
Very true, any good local store should be able to give between 10 and 20% discount, after all they have usually bumped the price up at least three-fold before it gets sold.

Getting to know the local merchants is always worth doing, 20% discount on repeat sales is worth half a bottle of Scotch at christmas and a few eggs every now and then ;)

Go Outdoors are successful for the same reason that Tesco are successful, convenience of it all being under one roof and the fact that the local shop can't usually match their prices, not down here at anyrate.

Buy in bulk and cheap, and sell at minimum profit for quick turnover.

Look out for "Wholesalers" who will sell to groups.

I also think that if you went to an independent shop with a list of what you want they would come back to you after talking to their suppliers, with a price.

I shall get of my hobby horse now!!
