A better option for yourself then, but for the masses the countryside is not their comfort zone, and they will, (though not everyone) possibly be swarming through like locusts trying to survive.
It can be a bit like the "what does Geronimo shout when he jumps off a cliff" scenario
Where is the best place for my BOL? Ah yes, I think this, for me, was one of the most difficult questions to find an answer to. I thought long and hard over it.
Firstly you have to ask yourself what sort of emergency would force you to quit the safety and comfort of your own home. If it's just a local or temporary emergency then TG is absolutely right, book into a hotel/guest house away from the danger. If on the other hand you're thinking in terms of a TEOTWAWKI type situation that's an entirely different matter. In that (very unlikely) scenario your priority will be to evacuate to somewhere where you're either unlikely to be found, or can defend against aggressive intruders (or both.) On top of that it has to be somewhere relatively close; it's no good having a BOL hundreds of miles away if it's going to be a long hazardous journey getting there, as that would be fraught with dangers.
I expect some people here would recommend hiding up in woodlands but, unless you are truly proficient in survivalist techniques (I definitely am not!) I don't think the average person would last long like that, especially in Winter.
Look around your area, (deciding on a practical radius), examine several possibilities, (castles, churches, ROC underground bunkers, abandoned farm buildings etc.) weigh up the pros and cons of each site and then select two or three as possible locations. That way you will have more than one back up plan if ever you need it. Once you've chosen your BOL tell no one else about it.
A lake or river can act as a useful natural defensive barrier as well as a source of water. Hill tops can give a great field of view and warn of approaching danger, as can large, flat open spaces. Ditches, dikes and even some hedgerows can also form useful protective barriers.
Good luck edward.21 with your scouting exercise next week.
A biker committed suicide in a tent on forestry commission land near us. They only realised when they found the tent and body 9 months later. Ok so he didnt need to come out for food or water but it shows how much empty land is still out there.
It was empty before the people in the cities decided to join you! j/k, but there's an awful lot of city folk out there that would be forced out if there was no food or water. My biggest fear here would be desperate 'refugees'. If a few hundred lucked upon the house it would be impossible to protect the crops.
Gonna build me an ark and live on the sea
you're gonna have to swim if ya wanna get me
If I light a fire, I will burn my ark down
If I fall over board, I will probably drown...

The only place I can think of living/hiding WTSHTF is in the middle of the sea on a homemade boat, Seeing as there will be no fuel to sail ships/boats I should be safe? No Zombies or maddos to find me and pinch my stash. I have the worst luck on the planet, If I made a fire I would prob burn my boat/raft down to ashes and if I fell over board, I can't swim...So...back to square one to where I should hide/live if TSHTF big time
