:D Other than the situation I was in (a junior group therapist, where it was my responsibility to protect my clients) its still important to stand up - you can't run away so easily from a sitting position  and seriously, if you're going to trip someone up or something, you still have to stand up! I didn't mean I'd be aggressive, I meant I wouldn't curl up into a ball and collapse, thats all :)

hi tigs, ive looked at krav maga too. the israeli forces use it and its very dynamic. ive got a bit lazy of late though !! break away techniques and a good pair of trainers are the best self defence you could have. having to physically get to grips with someone post shtf would be very dangerous as there may not be anyone around to help you out. being fit ,ie being able to run off, and not behaving like a victim will keep you safe. oh and the shotgun you should soon be applying for of course !!!!

I've been boxing from the point I was old enough for my dad to put me in a boxing club as a kid, I'm now in my 29. I started Muay Thai in my early 20's, along with Awud Mied, mostly into MMA the last 5 years, which is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, but I'm still into Awud Mied.

Hi Guys

I have been training in various martial arts and self defense systems for over 25 years and i have to say that the traditional arts ie Aikido Karate Judo Ju Jitsu Kung Fu etc are just not effective in a reality situation, for example its great if you have practiced all these fancy techniques if you actually manage to "Master" them, but most depend on the attacker having similar techniques which you can almost guarantee they wont have. They will be very aggressive, very intimidating and very unpredictable which will be very dangerous if you don't know how to respond.

In my opinion there are a few good systems out there and as always take what works for you from each system. I would say its definatly worth looking at Krav Maga as its simple and very effective and is taught to kids at school in israel so its easy to pick up, Russian Systema is good and another i would definatly recommend in Lee Morrisions Urban Combatives.

We do not just need to know how to defend our selves our friends and families in a SHTF situation but in everyday life atm. Everyday on the news we hear of attacks, murders, kiddnappings, Rapes, mugging and more so we should have some ways to make ourselves aware and safer all the time. :)

Boxing and MMA are a good example of what I mentioned earlier, live training against resisting opponents who fight back.

Too many MA's involve looking good against compliant partners who just stand there while you do your all your fancy attacks or who throw themselves to the floor when you apply the slightest of wristlocks on them.

A lot of people who have trained unrealistically, even those at a high level, who find they have to defend themselves in real life will get a hell of a shock when their opponent, instead of just standing their waiting to be hit or diving to the floor, actually punches them in the face.

Raising your awareness levels, not looking like a potential victim, and a few simple but effective striking or grappling skills would be of much more use to a prepper than spending years learning how to look good in pyjamas

Another decent self-defence system is Wing Chun, it's a form of Kung fu that is purely for defending yourself rather than for sport. As with a lot of these things you do have to pick out the parts that work and find out these for yourself. But general it is a pretty good system that favours close range fighting in tight spaces.

I consider my main form of self defence to be prepping! Ie I will not be running around with all the loonatics trying to find food and water for my family in the days after any SHTF situation develops.

Whilst others will be fighting amongst each other over a loaf of bread or a gallon of water, I will be bolting down (not decided where yet) and being hidden away will be my main form of defence, if your dont put yourself in a situation where you are likely to be attacked then you are far less likely to need to defend yourself.

That being said I am going to be purchasing a .22 rimfire rifle in the new year, I have not decided to buy it for prepping purposes but if TSHTF then it will be very usefull for huning and defensive purposes!

I think if the shtf, as people become desperate, they will find hidden areas and break into them for food and water. I also think that after a while, no matter how well stocked people are they will need to go out roaming themselves.

I think if people are prepping for shtf scenarios they need defensive and offensive weapons. Martial arts are no good against someone with a shotgun.

When I watched the second episode of doomsday preppers recently they featured a liberal family who were part of a commune. They were very well prepared with food and water. They refused to get any weapons as it was against their beliefs and they were convinced they would he able to talk people out of attacking them!

I'm afraid if you prepare that well for a shtf scenario you HAVE to be prepared to defend it otherwise the preps are pointless IMHO.
