they all have their own qweerks , 300tdi`s its the belt tensioners that tend to fail . also rust is a issue on the back end , oil leaks ,well they come as standard .td5`s have the oil in the loom issue`s that tends to ruin the ecu . also the fuel pressure regulator tends to leak fuel and is a nightmare to swap , unless you have small hands [ i dont] .
the thing is they are cheap and theirs lots of them around so saucing spares is quite easy .

Re: Which 4x4
Metatron thanks for the offer but the G is out of my league. Having read some reviews on the Shogun I find it more and more interesting. Toyota Land Cruiser and Hilux are a bit pricey for what they offer.
So now let's look at Shogun. Could I run it on veg oil without any problems and could I modify it with a snorkel? What else could I do with it? Looking at the prices I could probably get something decent for around £2k so I would have around £500-1k to modify/fix. I take it I'm looking at the model ending 2000 because after that it was D-ID. Have any of you guys had personal experience of these?

Re: Which 4x4
is it a BOV your looking for or a day to day run around .
my mate runs his on veg , no problem with it
.
if its a bov then you need to be looking at older 4x4`s , the newer they are the more electicker is in them , sensors ecu`s ect all can and do fail leaving you with a truck thats not worth having if or when you need it
.
ive got my eye on a hilux diesel pick up going cheap , i did pass on a surf they other day . for no other reason than its electric parts .
if you want something thats easy to work on bullet proof engine and are not a badge snob , then look at then ssanyong musso , massive load space , merc engine 2.9 td and runs on just about anything so long as its oil , even hydolic oil

My everyday ride is a Subaru Forester which has proved itself quite capable in some light off-road situations, but as for maintenance by the DIY mechanic, forget it! I couldn't even find the oil filter the other day. Granted it was a half-ar$ed search from above, but still! Apparently, the spark plugs fit down the side of the engine block and you need a special Subaru tool. When it was serviced recently, the guy said that in addition to the service, they upgraded my software! Still can't get to grips with that!
I also have a '93 Land Rover 90 which has been heavily modified and is rediculously capable off-road - even though it's off-road (not the good kind of off-road) at the moment with a gearbox fault.
My GOOD vehicle is another Landy - an '85 ex-MOD 110. It's currently filling (and I do mean filling!) the garage at the monent. It has no MOT/tax/insurance, but in a SHTF situation, I don't think that'll be too important!

Re: Which 4x4
Hi the pre D-id MK2 pajero's with the 2.8TD would be the better vehicle, it has a timing chain rather than belt. it will run on veg & parts are easy to source as are upgrade parts, though a common fault is the front seal on the injection pump fails and leaks diesel into the oil..£3.00 part and took me 9hrs to replace it.
& it can be an engine wrecker if left to leak.! check engine oil does not smell of diesel.
The mk1 2.4's had water pump and timing belt issues. both are good reliable vehicles but will be rare to find a manual, most are auto's fitted with all the bells and whistles.
my swb 2.8mk2 paj was reliable except for the pump oil seal and returned 22mpg.
when i sold it I made £2K over what i bought it for.. wohoo..

Re: Which 4x4
Thanks for the link and info "90". Yeah, I'm closer to getting either a Pajero/Shogun or Hilux Surf and then getting the modification done to be able to use veg oil. There's a company in UK which sells the whole kit for £600 or they can sell and install it for you for £1200. It's a lot of money for what it does but may be worth it at the end.

Not being a big expert on cars but... ive come across a new 4x4 on the market for those of us on a budget.. a brand new Dacia Duster (sold by renault) is only £11k.. they are basic cars without all the added extras, The top gear bloke says its one of the best cars of its kind on the market.
Worth a looksie!?

I'd avoid anything new as new cars are a waste of money. You drop most the value the moment you drive it home.Optimystic wrote:Not being a big expert on cars but... ive come across a new 4x4 on the market for those of us on a budget.. a brand new Dacia Duster (sold by renault) is only £11k.. they are basic cars without all the added extras, The top gear bloke says its one of the best cars of its kind on the market.
