Diabetic worries
Re: Diabetic worries
Personally I think EMP is up there in the tinfoil hat display. I would be concerned about economy crash/ disruption/ supply disruption etc.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

Why not a small campervan Dual fuel fidge? one that runs on bottled gas, even then a very small amount I don't know how long a domestic calor gas cylinder would run a wee camper fridge but I'd be thinking weeks, not days and a few cylinders could be stored? just an idea, even if no gas, it's a candle sized flame. may swap out with oil burner even tilley lamp type of burner could run for ever on that?

I too am insulin dependant and so a long term survival situation could be quite a problem recently i have been researching the use of cinnamon as a reducer of blood sugars but the problem with that is shelf life, that's if it is effective I believe you can buy it in tablet form but it is quite expensive so stock piling it in powder form is probably the cheapest option.

Re: Diabetic worries
In terms of refrigeration, did you think about running water or even underground? Might not be great long term, but would help a lot short term.
Re: Diabetic worries
Just got diagnosed yesterday as type 2 diabetic. Started taking magnesium supplements for something else a month ago and have lost over 4 lbs inc xmas excess. Reading up yesterday after the news from GP, magnesium helps with uptake of sugar from blood so wondering if this is why I lost weight. Guess I will be stocking up on metformin and magnesium.

Re: Diabetic worries
Thanks for tip. Lots to take on board and head a bit of a mess as being made redundant and coping with last few weeks on job, job hunting and prepping for interviews.
I'm so grateful I dont have to inject as that would have made me a snivelling wreck. Good news, hospital people today said avoid 'diabetic' foods (unneccessary and sweetener used has nasty side effects), so as long as I avoid sugary drinks etc and eat a healthy diet (ha!), I can still enjoy the odd bit of dark chocolate... AND I can still have my Golden Syrup flavoured microwave porridge.
On a prepping note, we were advised that Basmati rice was best rice for GI (ie slow release of energy whilst still feeling full), is that also one of the cheapest/best for long term storage I wonder? More homework.
