I Agree, I've no particular need for a generator in my situation, but I can see it might be important to some.

Agree with AWR, prepping to me means preparing for things to be different. Not trying to exactly replicate the present.
Re smoking if I smoked I'd stop ! failing that, lookup the wartime or Depression era books, as I know they mixed leaves with tobacco to make it last longer. Might've been hawthorn but I not sure.
Re the fire, I'm surrounded by umpteen miles of forestry commission trees so we would be ok, I not really sure how to manage without wood. Peat up north/on moors, but it's a hell of a lot of work.

In the US and Canada most stoves are electric not gas. You also need electricity to ignite the furnace and run the furnace fans. So here electricity is an absolute essential for most people.

The first things to disappear are usually bottled water, petrol, alcohol and tobacco products then any kind of food.

As always, it depends what sort of Emergency hits us?
For example a short-term one would mean we'd have no need for a generator, whereas a longterm one lasting months or years would make a gen a must-have thing.
Here's my list of Emergency types-

1- Chernobyl-type nuclear plant accident, but on a much bigger scale, poisoning an area as big as the USA or the whole of Europe and Asia.
2- World War 3 exchange of nuclear weapons poisoning virtually the entire planet.
3- A plague wiping out most humans on earth after accidental release from a bio research lab, or a deliberate release by terrorists to wipe out the population of a specific country, or perhaps a virus naturally evolves that has no cure.
4- EC Event (Economic Collapse) triggering total breakdown of law and order resulting in looting gangs etc.
5- EM pulse (from a solar flare or nuclear bomb) blows out the electricity grid and electronics, it'll be bad but hopefully the govt will have contingency plans to get relief food and medicine convoys up and running.
6- Mega-earthquake bigger than anything the earth has experienced before, demolishing a whole bunch of cities.
7- Mega-tsunami triggered by gigantic quake at sea, wiping out coastal areas for a hundred miles or more inland.
8- Runaway volcano that carries on spewing out dust and ash for months, throwing a grey wind-carried shroud around the planet blocking out sunlight and triggering subzero temperature drops.
9- Haywire weather (nonstop storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, floods etc) caused by global warming, pollution, ozone depletion etc
10- Massive meteor or asteroid strike wiping out millions with blast and tsunami, and kicking up enough dust to black out the sun for years like what wiped out the dinosaurs.

All depends not only on which scenario, but the speed it unravells at, for instance only 2,3, and 10, are really quick things, others wouldn't effect everyone one on the planet, then everyone but alot slower, a few 4+9 could even already be under way but the frog in hot water syndrome has most of us blind sided, half of 5, then 6,7,8,+10, are the real long shots, albeit probably inevitable though on a planetary timescale.

The interesting thing I see here is that if we prep for individual economic/heath dificulties/collapse to start with, then the number 4 scenario's triggering total breakdown of law and order resulting in looting gangs etc, becomes a common factor at some point in all the others, which could be a sort of standard book of prepping model.
