I have a number of disputes regarding the set up in this video.munchh wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2mY7AR7 ... 0is9Uq4QHQ
......a treeless hammock it is!
1. The hammock he uses is the worst type of hammock you can ever have. (I have tried one) It's too small, even for someone of my stature. They're very uncomfortable, and would be very cold if used in the way depicted in the video. i.e. No insulating layer beneath you.
2. The angle it is set up at would cause you to slide down in it.
3. IF you did manage to sleep in it and you woke up in the night, there's a good chance you would bang your head on the ridgepole if you sat up and forgot about it.
4. It's too close to the ground. This would allow all sorts of critters to get to you in the night, especially in the USA.
5. Regarding his knots. He needs to learn his knots again. His Square Knot was an Overhand Knot. His first so called Prusik Hitch was a Girth Hitch - Only when he made the second pass did it become a Prusik Hitch (4 Finger). The Taut Line Hitch wasn't. A proper TLH is a Slide and Grip Friction Hitch used to apply tension to a line. After several attempts, he made a correctly tied Clove Hitch. (Trust me, I know my way around a piece of string )
Now, that said, I know the guy was just showing a way of rigging a hammock if no standing trees were available, and I appreciate Munchh putting the idea out there, I just think that there is probably a better way of doing this. Would just take a little thought.
