I have been looking into mma training we have a gym called fight den that have some amazing trainers going to have a look around there gym next week Ive wanted to do it for a while now as I do enjoy watching UFC with the hubby.
And the summer house hmmm yes it's completely not secure at the moment just a padlock on the doors and that can easily be taken off with a screw driver have just stored water in it for now and was going to stock my tinned goods in there.
As for the weapons yes I understand the law of the land but if havoc ever broke loose after any kind of disaster I wouldnt think twice in using what ever means and force I can to protect my children.

Find a local MMA club and train at least three times a week, including sparring. That will get you used to incoming traffic and boost both your fitness and confidence to deal with violent situations. Trust me if you start waving anything around and can't follow through then you will be in a world of hurt.

This man speaks a great deal of truth. Please oh please NOBODY go out buying knives or any other weapons with a view to using them for self defence. Besides the legal implications, the chances are, any attacker is going to be at an advantage in terms of motive, aggression and readiness. The weapon you take to the conflict to defend you may very well be your demise.

Unarmed self defence techniques are preferable, as they don't rely on you being near 'your weapon' and will rely on your own reflexes and conditioned responses to a situation rather than hoping that a big f-off hunting knife (or any other weapon) is going to turn you into some sort of combat expert.

A better frame of mind to begin with would be hiding or securing ground floor knives and weapons (in the kitchen say) so that intruders can't use what you already have against you.

Chances are the knife you propose to buy would give you a false sense of security and never be used in the event of an attack. Knife fighting isn't like the movies. If you pretend to know what you're doing and the other person actually does, your bluff with backfire, badly.

If you must rely on a weapon, improvise something more mundane, and less deadly if turned on you!

A broom handle will keep people from accessing a choke point such as a landing or hallway and has great range if used to prod people back. I don't think that would be viewed as excessive in the same way a crossbow and Bowie knife might! stay safe and try not to worry so much!

I doubt your neighbours are going to turn into flesh eating zombies if we have a SHTF scenario, more likely the old British spirit of WW2 will resurface and folk will club together for food and help! At least I hope that would be the case? :?

Go for it mate :) I have dozens of weapons all over the house, forks in the kitchen draw, hammers in the shed and garage, stainless steel ballpoint pen in the jacket pocket. The list is endless :)

i agree with firepower mma or some other form of self defense martial art is more than sufficient although you may find that a cross bow could be more beneficial if the inevitable happened, so i guess it's whatever you feel comfortable with, you could also join a .22 air rifle club nearby to get used to firing at targets which helps with catching rabbits, hares and squirrels etc, bush craft skills would be useful here so spend time practicing these in your local woodland/forest but always remember that safety is paramount and that the law is still the law so you must abide by them until there is no law....

you may want to look into applying for a shotgun licence and take up clay pigeon shooting in your local rural area shooting club for practice at shooting moving targets, here in near cannock chase we are surrounded by beautiful countryside and an abundance of shooting clubs, it is a lot of responsibility owning and handling a firearm so do some good extensive research prior to considering this...

self defense classes are really cheap these days as are crossbows, the internet would be the best source for a crossbow, but yet again i must stress that safety is paramount and ensure you practice in a safe location and you download ebooks from either a forum link or watch youtube videos, but make sure you practice where it is legal to do so.
