But why pay for a name, there are other better knives without the tag.

I have a couple of gerber multitools, but they only do the same as a Draper, although they might last a bit longer ;)

Then the best route to go is to design and commission a master cutler to make you one, maybe Bernie garland will do one for you ;)

I'm old school

#8 Opinel
Mora (mines a Utility currently, but I'm looking at the classic wooden handled ones)
Kentish axe
Pocket Chainsaw

I own a machete, a billhook, several other axes and hatchets and a Kukri as well but the above four would be my INCH cutting set

For basic bushcraft a Mora anytime, add in a heavy chopper (axe, bill, WHY) and a fine-cutter (a good sharp folder or one of those razor-knives ) and you're GTG

Opinel and Mora is about right. Cheap ,sharp and EASY to keep that way! The Butcher in me knows what a good knife is. I have used knives virtually everyday for thirty years.

Just thought I'd add this

With a lot of factory knives you get the feeling that you're paying for the name or the advertising (or the endorsement), Moras (and to a lesser extent Opinels) I feel that you're paying mostly for a nice bit of steel thats been well heat-treated (and tested) and then turned into a usable knife.

My Utility still has the crop-marks on the back from where it was stamped out of the steel........ Could they of ground and polished the back? Well yes, but then it might of cost me a whole extra pound (10% increase)... Do I care? Not at all

Yep would second that choice
And I would third this choice for the budget. Check out other model Moras too.

Thanks for all the replies - I knew I would get sound advice here! I'm leaning towards an Opinel - they were my first choice so I'm glad to see so many approve. Just need to decide now on a #6,#7 or #8. Any suggestions - v. little info on them on Amazon. Oh, and being a traditionalist and wanting it to be aesthetically pleasing as well, I do like a wooden handle... (this is where all the blokes tell me I'm like a girl choosing her car by its colour!!!)
