Heres a poem you might find useful.

Oak-logs will warm you well
That are old and dry
Logs of pine will sweetly smell
But the sparks will fly
Birch-logs will burn too fast
Chestnut scarce at all
Hawthorn-logs are good to last
Cut them in the fall.
Holly-logs will burn like wax
You may burn them green
Elm-logs are like smouldering flax
With no flame to be seen
Beech-logs for winter time
Yew-logs as well
Green elder-logs it is a crime
For any man to sell.
Pear-logs and apple-logs
They will scent your room
Cherry-logs across the dogs
Will smell like flower of broom
But ash-logs, smooth and grey
Burn them green or old
Buy up all that come your way
They're worth their weight in gold.

Ours is a Parkray Cumbria, and we burn only coal. It's pretty dangerous in high winds, you have to keep a very low fire in or the thing turns into a blast furnace and the radiators smell of hot metal. Once we had to throw on the entire salt stash to kill it before the house burned down  I'm used to coal/open fires, always had one, but this thing is lethal, think the builders haven't sealed it properly - but I love it and we just take care with it.

Few things to considerer been a prepper Chimney fires... Also home insurance many now request copies of installation certificates and sweep reciepts from a hetas registared firm or they might invalidate your cover

most pumps of that age come with stintered bronze ball valve mechanisms and hemp packing on the shaft so are user serviceable (clean balls and repack shaft seal with hessian soaked in tallow or hawk white

although a newer type...

coupled with these:

yes the fire service do still use them!

A water mist is ideal for tackling any burning carpets and the like and if the chimney fire is low enough in the chimney the fog of water should be drawn up to the fire seat by the air flow..

Not to forget a working fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector

Should cover all bases should it get out of hand :geek:
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

Apart from the back ache

Just glad I didn't have to split them.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
