Just giving the Girlguiding Blueprint a quick scan and this snippet from the past caught my eye, "July 1915: The 1st Kilmallie or 1st Invernessshire company is very busy collecting and drying spaghnum moss and sending it to various hospitals." One can only wonder what it was used for - can it be used as a poultice or dressing? Even with a lot of it cleaned away recently we have quite a lot still on our roof .

I think it was used as a wound packing, its acidic (inhibits the growth of 'nasties') and absorptive(so it can hold a lot of 'fluid'). However, its not used anymore because it can cause problems
