The gauze type is great; I would avoid the loose version as it is harder to wash out.
Given the response times for ambulances I would recommend anyone that does activities that could result in serious trauma to carry a good personal trauma kit. It could save your life and will buy time for you to get to an A&E department.
At the moment we are seeing times of up to 5 hours from injury to A&E for things like broken legs in the area that I work in.
Also consider a chest seal.
The training on CAT tourniquet has changed they now say we can apply to lower limb in order to make below joint amputation possible, if it does not work apply a second CAT to upper limb.
