There is no right ir wrong answer here, only opinion.

Look at the UK, strict gun control and low gun related crime.

US has a population of around 320 million and about 300 million guns are in circulation according to NRA and govt official figures. Thats just short of one gun per American. Firearms related crimes are a common occurrence.

Canada has a population of about 35 million. They have approx 80 million guns in circulation. Thats two guns per Canadian. Yet firearms related crime is also low in Canada.

I have been to both the US and Canada and enjoyed both countries. What I did notice while I was in Canada, was their attitude towards one another. They where genuinely friendly and nice people.

It just goes to show that guns are not the problem. Its society that is the issue when it related to weapons.

Firearms for defensive purposes? - A good link

Ok here is my ten cents worth.

Anyone should be able to defend themselves. There is far too much handwringing about proportional response. The bottom line is that someone being assaulted or burgled has no idea what the criminal is capable of or what their intent is. Therefore one should always assume the worst and make sure that the criminal is out of the game. Whatever it takes.

Firearms are the most effective tool in the world for defence. The act of drawing one and simply pointing it at an assailant will 99.9% of the time end the problem there and then. I have been in this situation and it ended peacefully with no injury to either party.

Should normal everyday law abiding people have the right to carry firearms for this purpose? Of course they should.

Defiantly mate,

I mean Britain’s often held up by gun control advocates in the states (and indeed over here) as proof positive that tighter restrictions work, yet historically we’ve just always had very low levels of gun crime, and if anything they’ve increased in spite of further regulations…

Like you say it’s all about society.

I agree it's about society, and it is society's lack of will to admit and address the real issues, prefering to blame the inanimate object, it's complicated and the gun control option is the easy cop out which on it's own becomes more a part of the problem.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
