That's the plan but technically, I think it's only classed as a submarine if it sinks then re-floats. Fingers crossed.

Squared wrote:Hey guys, newbie here.

Im starting from scratch this week, so during a long drive in the works van I carried out a kind of mental audit of my life and I identified the billy basic areas I need to get sorted in terms of what can go wrong and how I can reduce the risk/live on afterwards. This is day 1 week 1 stuff, probably boring to most of you, trust me, id rather be drinking nettle tea, burying bicycles and analysing maps but baby steps must come first.

Concern
Loss of income stream

The effects would be huge on my family, I am currently the sole bread winner and we could loose the home, the mortgage is already very high and we dont have much left over each month.

The Threats
1. Injury to myself
2. Getting the sack/being made redundant.
3. Other known unkowns

Execution
Pretty simple, pay heed to the Health and saftey Police, be switched on at work, take no needless risks and be preapred for the unkowns.
Great plan, Squared, as Briggs said. For overall prepping, you can't beat UKP as a starting point, but for the money-specific things, can I suggest the forum at moneysavingexpert, and making a Statement of Affairs - there are dozens of forum members (on the Debt Free Wannabe Board) waiting how to tell you to save up to hundreds of pounds a month. If you don't fancy joining and being a member yourself, its an open forum, you can read and take notes without joining. Deals on utilities, cheap shopping deals, online ways of earning money, lowest interest rate stuff around, you name it, its there. I have no connection other than being a long term member.

Good point about the health and safety too - it *can* go overboard, but there's actually a lot of good basic stuff on there too.

My own prepping: nothing at all this week :( I have a gastric thing that won't go :(

Thanks for the pointer Arzosah, I've looked on his site before for specific things like claiming back from airlines for delays etc but there's no harm in checking to see if there's anything else 'clever' on there that I haven't considered or know about, I've put it on my favourites to have a good neb at later.

I've been a bit lazy with the preps myself this week, still dehydrating apples from the garden, they're taking longer than I expected so the next batch will be thinner and/or a higher temp. Ordered some more first aid stuff from Mr Amazon (with a couple of more cheap cree torches) but nothing too serious. I need to up my game, especially if there's submarine building going on :o

Work on the submarine is progressing well with Mrs B is doing the more fiddly welding jobs.

I love her and everything but I'm not too sure on her arc-welding skills so to be on the safe side I'm thinking we should be doing the first test dive with a test subject. I just need some cat food for the trap....

Anyway, while Mrs B tidies up her welding and I wait for the neighbour's cat to get hungry, I've been doing a bit of a stocktake as it seems quite a few other are on this thread. My 'preps' (BBC researcher's ears prick up at the P word) have become a little dispersed and not as organised as I'd like. Food-wise, we're a bit lower than we like to be which is due to rotating but not restocking. Aside from food, I'm not 100% happy with the basics - batteries, torches, firelighters, etc, etc, and I'm online now looking for tritium key fobs following on from Yorkshire Andy's tip. Nice one, fella.

For the firelighters I was in Home Bargains the other day and I'm pretty sure they had them at 49p a packet. I picked up a couple anyway.

You've got to treasure a woman who can weld, especially if she looks like the one in Flashdance. ;)

You know, I've never been in a Home Bargains store but one has opened up fairly near us so I will pay a visit soon as I understand there are bargains to be had.
