When I was at school, we had a science teacher who reckoned people wash too much. I have heared of people who rarely wash their hair, in fact I tried it at uni for a few months. There was a bath in our flat. I remember having baths but not using soap sometimes. Water is back on, for now. I started cleaning some 5 litre containers I'd not got round to filling. No matter how many times I rinse then, I can't get the soap out! I've put a drop of bleach in for now. After I get them washed, rinsed, bleached, I will give them a Milton tab then fill.

I am glad you had water to cover a busted main. Well done!

Regarding washing “too much” though. Nah! Keeping clean is important .Doesn’t have to be a shower, although a portable camping shower - we have one- takes next to no water. I can wash under in two minutes flat, and properly. Being dirty can lead to poor health, both physically and psychologically. Clean is good. The other one for me that needs water is a shave. I cannot operate until I shave each morning. How blokes can go along with two and three days growth is beyond me.

Wet Wipes make a good hygiene prep. We use them when camping, along with no taint Dettol wipes for keeping the muck level down on the camp kitchen bits if water is very limited for conventional washing up.

Harvested one bed of onions and more beans. Onions were quite wet and died back, so drying them now. Showing willing by attacking lotment weeds before neighbours complain. More rat traps on lotment cos neighbour has grumbled a bit about seeing some.
Have added my horse poo to the heap. Fun job
Financial prep. Requested a water meter. It will save a fortune.

I can go about 6 days without shaving, then the itching starts. I mostly wet shave (single blade safety razor) and I find that a lot easier straight after a shower.

Regarding how often do we need to wash our bodies with soap. This is an important topic so it needs research. I will searh the net and provide some links and quotes. Let's see what turns up. I will try to do this in an unbiased way.

"When it comes to concerns about health, however, it's not at all clear that a daily shower accomplishes much. In fact, a daily shower may even be bad for your health."
"experts suggest that showering several times per week is plenty for most people (unless you are grimy, sweaty, or have other reasons to shower more often). Short showers (lasting three or four minutes) with a focus on the armpits and groin may suffice."
https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/sho ... 9062617193
Worth reading the reasons given.

"Showering every day may be a habit, but unless you’re grimy or sweaty, you may not need to bathe more than a few times a week. Washing removes healthy oil and bacteria from your skin, so bathing too often could cause dry, itchy skin and allow bad bacteria to enter through cracked skin. When you expose your body to normal dirt and bacteria, it actually helps strengthen your immune system."
https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/ss/ ... h-mistakes

"some scientists also tell us that being too clean is also wrong"
"A long shower every day may not be advisable, as it removes the “good bacteria” from our skin. But you should wash around your genitals and anywhere you sweat a lot. And you should change your underwear every day."
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2015 ... -too-clean

"expert dermatologists are somewhat divided on the daily showering debate. However, there are a few points that most people seem to agree on.

First, daily showering isn’t necessarily essential, but it won’t hurt you. "

  Well if you can go six days without a shave I sure don’t know how! 24 hours irritates me. Yes , I could , and I am expected to shave electrically. My drugs make my blood thinner. However, I still prefer water and a razor. In fact I have used a ‘cut throat’ for many years. Proper!

Regarding showers/ bathing though: I am sure that it won’t kill you if you don’t. However, stinking like a dirty pig ain’t my way. I do a lot of outdoor work, fishing etc. It makes one mucky.

Back in the day, a dermatologist I worked for said people wash their skin too often. Another said showering every day was necessary but be careful not to use soaps that are too harsh. Take your pick and do what's best for you but in case of lack of water, don't worry too much.

I recently joined a tai chi class in the village which was advertised as improving balance and helping to prevent falls. The afternoon of the first session I fell over a plant pot in the garden. I guess the effects aren't instant then. Seriously, I am always falling over and as I am getting older, there will come a time when I no longer bounce so I thought it was about time to try and do something about it. A friend reckons the people in her village who do pilates are the ones who don't fall.

AS most of you know I am a long term Tai Chi fan. It is great but not magical (regardless of what some fans say.) It will take severalweeks to see any impact - faster if you practice between lessons and longer if not. At least part of the benefit is down to strengthening some of the less used balance muscles in your legs and core. Like all muscles it is a case of use it or lose it so you see an improvement once they start growing.

I can assure you I don't stink. Pigs are clean animals apparently, although I haven't sniffed one. I used to shower every day when I was a tradesperson, but I don't need to stick to that these days. Sometimes I leave it a day or two. I would know if I started to smell. I will usually have a wash if I don't have a shower. I always have a shower after a bike ride.

My emphasis.

This is mainly why I posted this. In a SHTF scenario, it would be stupid to waste water doing something that seems to be unnecessary*, according to the experts. Also we live in an age where saving energy and water is a consideration. SHTF you are likely to be wet wiping. Not only will water be a premium, but so will wet wipes and coin towels. Your supply won't last forever.

*unnecessary to wash all over every day, not to not wash at all, obviously.
