Don't forget you can preserve apples too! Jars of apple pie filling are great for quick deserts and no need to pressure "can" either.
Definitely need to do a lemon bath with apples or they turn brown on the dehydrator, same with pears.
Plums are delicious dehydrated Deeps you won't be disappointed!
What are you dehydrating?

Re: What are you dehydrating?
Last year they were all turned into jam so I'll see if I can syphon off a few for the dehydrator. Its Her Maj's pal who has them and she was asking me about dehydrators tonight (she's round and they're downstairs yakking while I watch El Classico ) so she might get all 'selfish' and keep her own fruit, tssk.Decaff wrote:Don't forget you can preserve apples too! Sorry, just seen this, not been about for a wee while!Decaff wrote:redskies wrote:We have a 9 tray Excaliber, and it's awesome. Anything that looks like it might go off before it gets eaten gets thrown in there, and we do quite a bit of veg & jerky as well.
I posted a couple of links about three pages back, both very handy to have a look at and full of receipes and things. We're currently doing food powders, as well as rice and noodles as those can be made into ready meals and vacuum packed. An easy way to rehydrate meal packs is put the contents in a food flask, add boiling water, put the lid on and wait. You could, if you were hiking, have your evening meal in your pack and ready to eat by the time you stopped at night
What kind of food powders are you doing?? This sound intriguing! I have a good amount of tomato powder, garlic powder, onion powder and meat stock powder and would be interested in what you have planned, if you would like to share?
The plan is a nice stock of instant meals that we've made ourselves. Stuff that can be put in a food flask with boiling water and be ready to eat at dinner time. Still working on the list, but most of the powders below can be teamed up with rice (we made our own 3 minute), pasta or noodles. Or made into soup of some description.
Tomato - soup, sauces, ketchup
Garlic - soup, instant meal, or into butter to make garlic bread
Onions, we do chunks & powders - soup, instant meals
Any green veg - any green leafy veg can be powdered and added to whatever you like for a nutrition boost
Mushrooms, chunks & powder - instant meals, soups, or rehydrated & fried
Neeps - same as the 'shrooms
Carrots - same as shrooms, or powdered for adding soups etc
Stock - bouillon, made with beef bones or chicken carcasses, cooked down, then dehydrated. Used in meals & soups
Orange peel - packed with vitamin C, you can put it in drinks, yogurts - which can be made in the dehydrator - porridge, etc
You can powder damn near anything and add it to whatever you think would taste good for extra nutrition. We're aiming to have meal packs in vacuum sealed bags, lightweight for camping, hiking, and taking up little space for storage, plus vacuum sealed single ingredients for future meals. We also use the powders in day to day cooking, in the pizza sauce, for example. And I picked this up from the FB group...
Some of you know that I dry and powder the tough ends of asparagus for creamy asparagus soup which is really tasty. Yesterday my hubby made us scrambled eggs for breakfast and it was really delicious. I asked him what all he put in and he chuckled a bit and said: Red onion powder, chanterelle powder, tomato powder, celery powder, garlic powder AND ASPARAGUS POWDER! lol! The man who thought I was nuts years ago making all the powders used 6 of my home made powders in the eggs and it was delicious!

Re: What are you dehydrating?
Doing a 'twofer', leeks and peppers, 5 trays used and I've got 3/4 of a pineapple to go next. Loads of carrots too although I don't really use the carrots very often, still, better than going fusty.
Re: What are you dehydrating?
Here you are, from the blog whose FB I follow, all about food powders and the uses thereof. We tend to sub out anything prepackaged they add for something we've made ourselves

Re: What are you dehydrating?
I finally got round to dehydrating a load of leeks taking up space in my garden. Brilliant result! Now I am sold.I am collecting jars now like a demented squirrel.
