I really like that Rough Rider Fixed Mini! There are quite a few appealing looking Rough Rider knives on Hennie. Don't know anything about the brand though - are they famous?
On a separate note, I got a refund from my waterproof coat today. It was a Marmot Precip that cost me £57 - turned out that the arms weren't waterproof so what's the point of that then?! Anyway, I'm not buying another, parkaway coats all seem too fragile. Need to come up with a cheaper solution. Maybe just one of the £15 puppies from Mountain Warehouse.
Meanwhile, I've got £57 today that I didn't have yesterday, and what I really need is some good footwear. Does footwear count as EDC? I think so.
So here's my question of the day - if you only had one pair of shoes, what would they be?
This is an important thing to consider, I reckon. Cold feet is a bad thing, poorly fitting cheap shoes are also a bad thing. Heavy shoes are bad, but are they a compromise?
I'm finding the topic really difficult. I want something that I can use for work (smart looking), use for days off (warm in winter, cool in summer), and then use to walk up mountains (waterproof, tough and extremely comfortable). Do these shoes exist?

Sounds like you need a pair of classic magnums, but i know thats not everyone cup of tea, although they cover all your criteria?

Hmm - I didn't even know they were a thing. I thought they were just an anonymous boot that lots of people wear.
I'll check 'em out. They look a bit warm though, with all that ankle support. Not sure if they'd be good for work since I work indoors most of the time. They could be a good option for non-work days though.

BCH, that's all I own ATM (slippers don't count, right?).... Mind you, I'm told I'm a freakdangerman wrote:

Footwear should definitely the basis of all EDC's (assuming you're pedestrian, otherwise it should be your chair or scooter)

You might struggle to get something that's smart enough for work but will tick all your other boxes, the 'fabric' walking boots are light weight and give you all the other stuff, they make you look a bit of a weirdo if you're wearing them with a shirt and tie at work though. As a compromise, I see plenty of lassies who wear trainers to work with their business suits and (I'm guessing) either have a pair of work shoes in their bag or under their desk at work.dangerman wrote:I really like that Rough Rider Fixed Mini! Like i say they are not for everyone, i have worn boots all my life, i have found i like them taller the older i get, even my trainers are boots, i turn 45 next week so i grew up through the breakdance era, i still dress with this in minddangerman wrote:Hmm - I didn't even know they were a thing. there are many good boots that breath, i wear all mine when wearing shorts, but again this is not for everyone, i am still wearing shorts at work and at home, i run hot.
if i was having to choose one pair, i think i would have a pair of Altbergs made for me, but off the peg a pair of full leather classic magnums if i could find them, they are alot lighter than you think, i cannot replace the ones i have, they dont make them. Typical.

I do this, I have a pair of Merrell Moabs which seem to be the most comfortable footwear I've ever owned which I wear to and from the office, and keep a pair of smart dress shoes under my desk to change into.Deeps wrote:As a compromise, I see plenty of lassies who wear trainers to work with their business suits and (I'm guessing) either have a pair of work shoes in their bag or under their desk at work.
I end up walking quite a lot because I basically hate public transport and refuse to drive into central london, it's 6 miles each way but that's not really that bad.
Only down side is you'll then need another pair of shoes at home in case you have to go somewhere smart directly, but it's a small price to pay for the mind blowingly comfortable shoes you rack up the actual mileage in.

Re: A UK friendly specific EDC gadget thread!
Picked up two little molle compatible bags to keep some of my edc items organised, they were £4 each including shipping from China.
First impressions were, that the stitching and zippers were both well done and high quality and the 600D ballistic nylon was more than good enough the the task. The only thing I would change is dual zippers on each of the two compartments, but I'm not going to bitch for £4.
After a few weeks of use, they have not had a single issues and I use one, or both everyday.

I picked up some of those cheap skull pocket tools to use as part of a few gifts. Their under £2 so bought 10. They open a bottle of beer well, can be used on small nuts and look cool. They do have a little too much flex on them for my liking, so I'd not want to use them to pry up a nail, but you can use that part to open a box.
Overall the Gerber Shard is a better similar tool (better made/stronger), but at three times the price and a lot less attractive, if you have no intention of ever using as a pry bar, I'd go with the cheaper option.
They come in a box, so gift friendly, unlike a lot of Chinese stuff which just comes in a bag.

Re: A UK friendly specific EDC gadget thread!
Thanks for all the advice on shoes lads. For now I think I'm going to concede and just buy a couple of pairs of shoes which will individually tick most, but not all boxes. B will tick all boxes between both sets of shoes. I've gone for a set of slip on Clarks for every day, comfortable, sturdy, smart looking footwear (they cost £20 on offer but I've still to collect and try on - ryley street they're called). I'm now in the market for some heavier duty but still light, black, waterproof walking boots - leather maybe. But I think I'll delay on that for now because it might cost a fair few quid.
I bought a cheap little EDC knife from Amazon - I wanted another world legal knife like my Lansky and with a nice pocket clip, but without the bulk. This badboy cost me £3.49 and I'm made up with it. First impressions are very good.
The clip will make of break the usefulness of this thing for me though, if it hangs securely and discreetly on my leg pocket then it will be perfect. But if, like my Led Lenser P3, it flops and moves around, or comes falls off my pocket entirely, I'll end up shelving it. Here's hoping!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017 ... ge_o01_s00

I'll post up some pictures of the actual knife shortly, just need to wait for my phone to finish charging.
Also, I bought a new phone case for my LG G3. I have been worried lately that I'm taking too much of a chance with my phone, I kept buying cases that looked sleek but I wasn't convinced that they would protect the phone if dropped onto hard surfaces. So I upgraded to this GreatShield from Amazon.

It's solid, very. In fact, it feels invincible. One drawback is that now as the case is on, I can't get it off. I had a good try yesterday and the case eventually let the phone go, but kept the back cover for itself.
Now I'm just worried about water damage. :/
I think my next phone might be waterproof - like a Z5 or something like that. I'll have to give up the swappable battery that I like. But I watched an episode of 24 where a feller was killed because he fell in the canal and then wasn't able to call Jack Bauer to rescue him.

They look tidy - are they copied from a Maxpedition TC6 or something? What are you going to use them for?metatron wrote:Picked up two little molle compatible bags to keep some of my edc items organised, they were £4 each including shipping from China.
