Bought another 3 battery powered led sensor flood lights for outside from b&q going to stick them round the back garden already have one at front door ok not Blackpool illuminations but bright enough to find your keys and find your way up the garden and being battery powered no need to get an electrician out and will work in a power cut so should give a bit more security
Not planning for the end of the world just to survive till normality resumes, while sticking to the scout moto be prepared!
Still considering do I want to survive the end of the world or deck chair on the front lawn with a cold beer?

Managed to get an induction ring compatible stove top kettle
(ok not the most thrilling things but with the prospects of camping this summer with a little one the safest way to cook is going to be on a serviced pitch with mains electric using a electric hob
but will double up as a prep at home if the gas supply cuts off ( lots locally lost gas when the area flooded) ended up with my gran looking worried when she lost hers..
"Ive fetched you a camping stove grandma!" ... . look of worry filled her face..... She had images of the old pump up parafin ones that my grandad took his eye brows off with when they were young...
quick lesson with the bistro stove and fears were swiftly allayed.. Its just like a can of fly spray so i just press this lever.. then turn this till it clicks. and cook... and i can turn it down!
..
she could have come to live with us but she wasnt prepaired to let the loss of gas force her out of her own home / bed
ok we have an electric kettle but another way to heat water isnt going to go amis

Just been sampling some of the fruit I canned (with pressure canner) at the beginning of March as Christmas is sorted.
So far, the strawberries look really unattractive (very faded colour) but taste fine, pears did best, blueberries, blackberries & raspberries are also fine.
I used the lightest syrup recipie I could find & still find it very sweet but I'm not used to eating fruit that isn't fresh so I guess I'll just learn to live with it.
They have just been stuck at the back of a cupboard in my kitchen since canning.
None of the seals had gone so I'm really pleased with my tests overall.
I used cheap reduced supermarket fruit for my first tests because I couldn't wait to try the canner out & it's basically as good as it was when it went in - just a bit softer & some of the colour & taste of the fruit has leeched into the syrup.
So, that's a definite fruit is fine for 9-10 months after canning, still have a couple of jars left of each to try at 1 year & 18 months.
Next year I'll be canning from the garden.
I've been reluctant to grow much as I hate throwing food away so I'm now busy planning a slightly larger fruit & veg patch.
Going to see how they cook up now.

I'm looking to make this a bigger purchase of mine next year.
Re: What preps are you doing this week? part 2.
I got a Presto 23 quart pressure canner on ebay, it cost me a total of £62.68 inc postage etc (was about $100 at the time all up).., the seller I used is no longer listed on ebay so haven't provided a link but there are a few around.
Took about a fortnight for me to receive it.
Will hold 7 quart, 20 pint or 24 half pint jars in one go (is deep enough to stack the shorter jars)
That was the biggest one they sold, I figured I'd rather have the extra unused space than have to always run smaller batches.
It's a storage issue - box is approx 38cm x 38cm x 38 cm & the pressure cooker fills the box so I can't fit it in one of my kitchen cupboards.
Presto is a cheap brand according to my reading around the web but I personally find the fact it's made out of aluminium & light without water in it an advantage.
If it were any bigger I couldn't use it on my stove top - have to use the largest of 4 gas rings.
The brand everyone raves about seems to be All American, but they cost a lot more.
It was outside my budget, but you will find a LOT of reviews for the various ones if you google & your budget may stretch a little further than mine.
