What Preps are you doing this week
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
My runner beans are doing great. So yesterday I salted six pounds down. I have been wanting to try this, like my Mum used to. Why salting, when I have 3 freezers? Mainly 'cos it is low tech, but also I find frozen beans awful. Let you know how it goes.

I went to P0undland today to get some more £1 squeezy torches and they have all gone I only bought 3 last time and as I want to hang one on a hook behind every curtain in the house for ease of access in an emergency I am mad at myself for not buying more when they had them.
Had intended to get a few more preppy items but they really didn't have anything there today - better luck next week I hope.

i've got a personal motto:" get it when you SEE it, not when you NEED it", chances are when you go back for it, its all gone, just as you have found out

Yes! I meant to put that on the end of my post. If you see it, and you think you need it, buy it! Can always flog on flea bay if you find you have too many.
Gutted about those torches.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Yesterday, I got my keyring in order - from an understated two keys and a black leather oblong, its now also got my pink ResQme (which I know how to work now!!!), an LED light, and an orange whistle. Clashing colours is now, y'know?
I also spent time sorting out another route to get back to mine in case TSHTF while I'm away ... I really enjoy doing those routes! I've got two more to do, for towns that I visit quarterly, then I'm done.

My emergency whistle arrived today and has been attached to my keyring so I always have it with me
I want to get the kids one each to attach to their squeezy torches so they have both to hand, right by their beds - amazing what comfort I am getting knowing that they will have those things if an emergency strikes whilst we are asleep in our beds.

Just a guiding note:
Trying to set fire to freshly cut prunings is like setting fire to a puddle - the wood is still full of water.
Better to set fire to dead wood that you find on the ground than fresh stuff from a tree.
A good tip is to carry a small tin that you can fill with 'punk' which is any dry and easily lit natural material that you find when out walking, eg. birch bark
Good practice for when you are in a bad situation.
Also, remember that a fire needs air blowing through it so don't just set a higglety-pigglety pile as your fire.
Build a proper one that will guide the air through from your 'punk' to your timber.
A cob fire is good but there are others too. Prepare your woodpile before you light up and dry any damp wood by the fire for future use.
Practice makes perfect!

Investigating learning to drive at long last. It would certainly be handy if TSHTF.
