Dont let the fireman know, the legal limit is 20l (2x10l metal containers) or 10l (2x5l plastic containers), unless you have a license to store more. Diesel is very useful, but not great for storage inside the home. I've got a few litres of fuel for stoves in the house and I'm always a bit nervous about that personally...each to their own however.

there is no limit to storing diesel at your home, the limit for petrol within 6m of your home is 2 metal 10l + 2 plastic 5l

It was me! Attach them to the unit legs with velcro!!! We're doing this with our new (to us) kitchen install and there's LOADS of space created - mega space - completely, totally spaced out!!!! (i'm excited by this - you can tell).

if the velcro wears out - put new stuff on, costs pennies and is one of the few projects in our house at the moment that doesn't involve 28lb hammers or de walt drills!

im new to this site and live in luton beds and have been prepping for a good while now and have bought a wind up radio/torch and and been doing essential repairs to the discovery. collecting old sump oil and made a small stove/heater to burn it so wont rely on wood or coal for both uses, plus its free. been making food and storing it in baby food jars (thanks to my daughters 5 kids, got 6 myself all grown up) and trying to see how long it can stay edible for(just experimenting at the moment). then just plenty of thinking about more prepping.

Seems the Fire service website I got my info from and HSE don't agree then :
"The Law

Storage of fuel at home or the workplace (unless specifically licensed) is restricted by law to either metal containers with a maximum capacity of 10 litres or approved plastic containers of a maximum 5 litres capacity. These containers should be designed for the purpose and must be fitted with a screw cap or closure to prevent leakage of liquid or vapour.

Petrol and diesel fuel should be stored in no more than two 10 litre metal containers or two 5 litre plastic containers. They should be clearly labeled as to their contents.

Petrol filling stations operate under license conditions, which do not allow drivers to dispense fuel into other types of container.

At home, fuel containers must not be stored in living accommodation such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms or under staircases. Any storage place should be well away from living areas in case of fire and it should be secured, to protect against the possibility of vandalism or arson."

I guess the HSE comment on the relative safety of diesel (with a higher flashpoint) makes sense however. Thanks for the link, it contained some useful info. It seems you can legally store your 30l of diesel the7ps, I stand corrected :)

If one wished to be utterly pedantic you may store petroleum spirit in domestic premises in 2 metal containers which must hold no more than two gallons each plus 2 plastic containers which may hold no more than five litres each, They forgot about updating the old metal can regulations when they issued the plastic can regulations.

My Halfords plastic containers will hold seven litres but the manufacturers said, when I queried the regs with them, that they would only hold five litres safely, the rest was to allow for foaming and expansion so they were really rated as five litres maximum.

Diesel is not a petroleum spirit under the regulations so there come under separate legislation which does not mention domestic storage.

In this case the HSE and fire service are wrong.

You may store what you like in the fuel tank of a car and I have never got a decision as to weather an outboard motor tank is classed as a vehicle tank and outwith the regs or a container and within.

Be warned though, there may be local council fuel storage regulations and the insurance companies each have a different opinion but will be looking out for a way to weasel out of paying up if they get a chance.

Anyhow my personal s hit the fan this weekend but the Girls are keeping me grounded!
Sorry to hear that Jansman, but I know you have been preparing for this moment - this is your personal shtf moment. Chin up mate!
Been away awhile, and things are the same. Looks like Jansman is going for a career change. Don't know what, where or how. There WILL be a change. Shame to waste 30 years of skills , but if there is no market or proper pay-why bother?
