depression and despair are totally different things. spiritual beliefs may well help with despair and for some it causes despair.

i have to say the only thing that really worries me is the fact that i was diagnosed with bipolar type 2 disorder about 4 years ago. I am now on medication for that , but what happens if the meds are no longer available? i suppose i am fortunate that with type 2 the symptoms are extreme highs and lows, where as if i was type 1 the symptoms are much more extreme and would present themselves as similar to that of schizoprenia.

Agree that staying healthy is the best option. However depression is not something that only hits the unwell. I have once had a short and not too bad bout of depression, many years ago after a tragic death. This led me to work out the whys and wherefores for me, I stress ME, everyone is different, I know my own warning signs and how to combat them before they get a hold, as a result it is a long time since I,ve had even the warning signs and so far have managed to stay positive and well. In my case, I would not answer the phone/door because I couldn't be bothered, or I'd cross the street on the rare occasions i'd go out, rather than speak to a friend. My main "cure" was exercise, walking as much as possible and forcing myself to concentrate on others, in my case, family.
Having said all that, I don't know if that will work for me if the situation was dire, ie missing/dead family, constant danger but I suspect few of us have much idea about that, as usual I expect we'll just do our best.

Been going on quite nicely thinking I was doing really well then hit a wall the other day I know what caused it (I need to fill in some forms) and I need to see the doc which I can't do for two weeks so will have to mange as best I can BUT for me knowing that I am depressed is half the battle I know I can't sit in the corner rocking and crying, I know the panic attacks are just that and if I give in to them they will get worse so I can't give into them. Thank god I have animals that need me to physically go out and look after them, found out the first time round that I could ignore the dog needing to go out for a walk, but I have to go and feed the animals in the field.
Been off the internet for a few days as I just could not be bothered, so coming on this morning is a step in the right direction, same with turning the TV on so I am now functioning and hopefully I will be ok until I can see the doc and see if I can sort the problem out.
I think what I am trying to say is know your depression and try to find out what triggers it, know the steps you need to keep you functioning, know and keep telling yours self that there is a light at the end of the tunnel even if you can't see it yet and each step you take takes you towards the light and understand that for people who do not suffer it is hard to understand what you are going through.

I wish with bipolar there was a trigger, I could then eliminate that trigger from my life. I can be all happy and cheery and then at the speed of a finger click I can switch and be suicidal and in absolute tears and not bothered with anything. Then feeling worse because I know it affects my 2 young children. It can quickly spiral. The only way to alleviate the problem is to keep as busy as possible to try not to let my mind start wandering, cos then I'm totally screwed.
