Most people greatly overestimate what is required to make clear water safe to drink. The moment it boils unless you're up in space it is drinkable (let it cool first!).
Any water you wish to store for later use can be left in clear 2L or smaller PET bottles in as much sunlight as possible, sterilisation can be achieved in sunny UK conditions within 2 days( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection for details).
Boiling any more than necessary A) reduces your capacity to produce potable water B) wastes the water you do make to evaporation.

That's correct, assuming the water is clear and filtered of any gross matter that might harbour nasties. The Milbank or other filtration (bandana, t-shirt, moss-and-charcoal-in-a-plastic-bottle) should take make it ready to boil. However neither boiling or filtration will get rid of chemical or heavy metal contamination.
