Not wanting to sound like I'm mugging you mate . But any hardish sharp edge will spark a ferro rod, even brass, glass or flint. You only need carbon steel if its Flint&Steel you're usingmunchh wrote: .......the blade is good for striking a ferro rod, but that all depends if you need it to do that, but all my knives are carbon steel for that reason.
I've got a few Hultafors knives, the Heavy Duty is a bit of a monster. The blade is wide and thick with an edge thats just asking to be remade Convex (ideal for battoning and other bull work)
The handle is equally robust and chunky, great if you have big hands but I find it a bit massive.
If you carry this as your only fixed blade you'd do well pairing it with a 'Fine blade' folder like your #8 Opi.
I used to use those cheap grey compounded stones, but found that they tend to wear hollow and then you can't judge the bevel angles correctly.
Now I use diamond hones (600 and 300 grits mainly, with a 200 grit for shifting the nicks in my axes) and couldn't be happier. I don't like the flat plate ones as I use then 'in hand', This is like mine.
I'd like a Mora #1... Old School
