Having never been stopped by Police asides from pulled over when the firms van was laying a black smoke screen on the M5, I'm always a little reluctant to comment, common sense about any given person's motives for having anything about their person, in their vehicle, or even in their home, or on their property, should be a factor on how police look at things, and for the most part it probably is..... but as a policeman friend of mine said once you can always get an arsehole or someone having a bad day, add to this some people (not just police) have a "nanny state" approach to many things and can be blinkered about other aspects of an area, for example too much emphasis on safety can blinker some individuals from seeing security and other practical issues, balance in everything is key, rule books and laws are a bug bearer with me, all too often I've found they can be misused themselves, even written to target certain individuals, and there is the problem with the 3" non locking thing - the specifics of banning things and how little they stop determined people form doing bad things, how as a society we have shifted from teaching common sense and right and wrong, to having so many laws, bans, rules and conditions, and nowhere near enough officers and checks to see that they are implemented that we are chasing our own tales rather than the bad guys  Lawyers and politicians love all this it gives them purpose, makes them a fortune, a fortune that would be better spent on education of common sense, prepping has it's roots in common sense, such things as the Scouts, basic skills in the home, garden, and even in the wilds were once considered essential, as were pocket knives ;)

I now have a Leatherman OHT by the way, when and where I carry it and the legalities of the issue vex me, I wanted the most useful multi tool or to not bother - simply carry a small pair of pliers along with my pen knife.

Here's another chestnut - Hammers so damn useful yet rarely seen as dangerous as a knife, and yet how many times has something been in need of a little persuasion? Many of us who have tried to fix things have surely resorted to knocking things together not designed for the purpose because carrying a hammer would seem OTT or look like a weapon, as I've said before for self defence I think a strong carrier bag and a tin of beans would be hard to be taken to task over, yet in itself no more a weapon than a multi tool.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Back to been able to edc carry a legal multitool

Just wondering how any police officer will view the remigrit saw hmmmm
I am a big fan of Gerbers. My original one must be over 10 years old now. Last year I broke the small screwdriver on a particularly stubborn screw. I contacted the local Gerber importer asking if I could order a replacement screwdriver to swap out. They asked for a photo of the broken part and my address. A week later I had a new gerber in the post free of charge. My kind of customer service!

On the subject of police etc, my orginal gerber lived in my laptop bag for a couple of years. Never took it out as I forgot it was in there. I did however take the laptop bag as carryon luggage on numerous flights without any problems :o

I also have a miniture victorinox knife on my keys. It has gone with me on international flights without any issues. Maybe I have just been lucky.

Unfortunatel the UK, like many other countries I have lived and worked in, has laws about knives and often it is down to the offical dealing with you as to whether its an issue. The police should be allowed to apply a bit of commom sense and flexibility to what they do. Unfortunately, the common sense bit might not always apply!

I totally agree with you, I'm sure most Police will have a good idea of who the baddun's are, the way we live though means that if they target the baddun's it can be seen as discriminatory. That means we all get treated the same, wasting both ours and the Polices time. Personally while I'm against discrimination it makes perfect sense to target resources, but one man's targetting can be another man's discrimination I suppose. Thankfully we live in a time and place where we have a good number of rights, unfortunately not everyone accepts the responsibilities that go with those rights, I can't see a way to change it that the politicians would go for so I guess we're stuck with what we've got. :(
