I can't help thinking that money plays a large part in this question. Historically and on a global scale people have moved from the country to an urban envoirment often in search of larger incomes . Living anywhere requires income on any practical level . A lower income can be traded off by harder work , if one is prepared to cultivate the land for instance less food needs to be brought. Travel costs become important too. My friends look at a 40 mile round trip to a supermarket from their Welsh house compared to being able to walk from home where they are now. That's a gallon of fuel just to get a pint of milk ( ok I know they would get a big shop in but you get the point) .
So go for it and accept either that you need a good income from somewhere if you wish to maintain the same lifestyle or accept a change in lifestyle to one of a simpler but harder kind ( which is of course the appeal to some).
You're dead right, moving from a large conurbation has a number of positives and negatives, money being a biggie! We made the move and it's the best thing we ever did, but it doesn;t suit everyone

Do these moves to the outer reaches of Sweden or Wales have to be permanent? Could it not be a five or even two year plan? Life is full of constant change and if there's one thing I've learnt its never say never

Sometimes you just need to go with your gut, if it feels right, go for it. If it doesn't then maybe you should pass

And again sometimes you can over analyse things................

This is a problem going around my own head at this very moment.
I will over the next couple of years be inheriting a rather tidy sum of money.
I have the offer to go State-Side to an area where an ex-pat friend lives, an area with a rather rural prepper and survivalist community which would suit me down to the ground.
My wife and I have done pretty much all the boring things on our bucket list and would jump at buying 20-30 acres and the construction of a largish cabin. That would be well within our budget.
But I have our 3 kids and 3 grand kids that would be here in the UK and that is a draw I/we just can't imagine breaking away from.
Having thought about it we will probably move and start a business to pass on to our kids and settle for dreaming of what might have been.
At 53 I'm too young to retire and too old to work for somebody else.
I so wanted to become a hillbilly y'all :D

Wulfshead there are less populated areas of the UK that are suitable like Wales and Scotland.

But property in the States is much cheaper

Have thought about selling up here and moving to the U.S. myself but my wife isn't keen on the idea even when presented with a rural house and 20 acres of land for around 70,000 in UK money

Think she knows we would just end up with 20 acres of V8 classic American cars for me to play with

Hamradioop,
Defender has a large part of my thinking pinned down right there.
I could spend 70k onland and a cabin and not have to worry about income again.
I'd want to go totally off grid so that would have taken up my time and stopped boredom.
It's also my hobby-come-part income of sword forging, It costs me £30 on top of the price of each order of steel to get it shipped from York to my bunker here in Essex
From what I gather most hardware shops keep 10-70 or 10-90 high carbon spring steel in stock.
I'd love to build a larger coal forge out on a few acres and be able to drive a few miles to buy the steel I need rather than wait a week for 10 meters of the stuff.
The yearly taxes on the plots we looked into cost from as little as $200 per year to around $500 so I could cover a few years taxes with just one or two sword commissions. My son-in-law works for a freight company and even with his discount it costs me £70 to ship State-Side. It was him maybe having to move out there with the family so he could manage a branch that made us first look into it, I think it's off the cards now.
Nothing against the people but I didn't like Wales when I use to go shooting there and I could not wait to get out of Scotland, I have both flavors of friends by the way.
As I said, I think I'd miss my kids and grand kids so I'll most likely move down to Yarmouth and open a coffee shop like the wife and I have been planning for a couple of years.
Gods, that'll be a challenge going from 88 meters ASL down to a hand full ASL lol I may need a tall mast.

Still thinking about it (but on the positive side). A little "jojk" to tell you about what it is like in the area I would move to.

Of course I will need some eye candy if I move and preferably someone like that to also keep my bed warm during those long cold winter nights.
