Why do so many people presume parents on benefits spend all their money on drugs/booze/ciggies/sky tv? Thats utter BS, don't let the very very small minority of people/families abusing their benefits cloud your view of the majority.
My wife (was retired senior mental health nurse then called back when covid arrived) at the moment runs a crisis assessment/intervention team in mental health. Our daughter is a social worker working with at risk young families. They are both helping people on a daily basis who have literally hit a brick wall; they quite simply have run out of money and options...thats the reality for many people these days and it annoys me when I read condescending statements along the line of 'they don't know how to prepare oats' and spending money on their nails and eyebrow work sort on nonsense.
Mental health services are under extreme pressure as more and more people develop things like clinical level anxiety and or depression for the first time in their lives and my daughter has recently seen two mothers taken into hospital because to feed their children they starved themselves and collapsed and suicide in the South Wales valley's is increasing and its not even talked about in the media.
Sorry for the rant (but actually it needed saying)

Re: Hungry kids
I am guessing that is aimed at me but then you do not see what i have seen in life and my wife and i are both on benifits , you best go to places like luton and bedford and dunstable and go round there i have seen it first hand , and when i say about people on benifits i am talking the ones that know how to play the system not genuine claiments , there are families that are born in to it and they know every loop hole and how to milk the most out of it , then you have others like my wife and i who grew up working for everything and due to major accident ended up in the benifits system .rik_uk3 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 1:26 pm Why do so many people presume parents on benefits spend all their money on drugs/booze/ciggies/sky tv? I have seen it first hand , and i do understand there are genuine people on benifits but there are larger amounts on it and milking it from the day they are born . The benifits system isa mindfield for many but some know how to get the very very most out of it , if a family can afford a bmw less than 3 years old and another car and 2 holidays a year and they are on benifits that tells me the system, is flawed
Also i know the valleys life only to well my mums family were in wales when cavemen still walked the earth , i think i am more than likely related to most of south wales in one way or other lol , i am talking of the people that know the benifit system so well .
But it is also true to many can not prepare a meal and would rather do take away , ask anyone i would say under 30 what they do with the chicken once they taken most of the meat off hmmm bin it not many young people boil up a carcass to turn it in to a stew , boil it up strain it get what little meat is left on it pick it over throw it back in a pan with some fine dice spuds and carrot and other veg and you have another meal .
Sorry top rant but i know the benifit system not great but well enough now to know you have to fight it genuine people do not know the system and hence we do not claim all we should , i can also say the benifit office staff will never tell you what more you can get
Oh i know i should watch the footy i do not want to argue richard but i remember going to my nans in the valleys as a kid my one uncle had a army tin hut on the hillside a big one and in there he use to breed rabbits and supply these the the locals in the village see i say there is food out there if my kids were hungry a pigeon boiled and meat stripped off in to a pot with some chicken stock and veggies you just don't let the kids know they will eat it , same with rabbit , nan us to put a bunny on the back of the range in a large pot simmer until the meat falls off the bone drain it off put the stock back on then throw in vegs and then strip the meat back in to the pot , honest i know it is hard and there are like your family have seen women and men going with out but most times i would say that is because they do not know how to play the system but also the help out life style has gone from the UK , neighbours should all help each other , but i think that life style has gone by the by , all us preppers can do and us older people can do is try and show younger people how to fight as i call it
