Re: Maglite accessories
Haven't bought this as yet but I think it could be a useful (but expensive) add on for a maglite

Spark plug ceramic smashed into chips would do the same job as a glass breaker for car side windows I'm told

Attack Warning Red wrote:Chef - what is this local big air raid shelter you speak of?... It's not one of the London deep level shelters is it?
No mate it's the Ramsgate air raid shelter, I think off the top of my head there are 4.5 miles documented, I know of 'other' sections which extend it to 6.5 miles I've done all of it bar one section I haven't located an entrance for yet, but I know the entrances to all of the other parts, when I get my lappy back (long story) I'll be happy to post some pics of the inside up, no entrances for obvious reasons, some are known and documented, others aren't and can only be seen from below.
The average depth varies but some parts are 65ft below ground level and most are dry as a bone, although there are flooded sections of crystal clear water filtered through the chalk, there are an abundance of deep shelters, smugglers tunnels, caves, bunkers and Napolenic structures in this area, plus quite a few that aren't in the history books and never will be.
If you fancy a trip south of the water AWR, down to the seaside in the summer, gimme a yell and I'll be happy to show you a few of our 'lesser known sights'.
Mr. Gnole in Scotland my exploring and otherwise partner was a police woman turned immigration officer, she knew the laws concerning access backwards, and we never had any problems even when confronted by security guards up there, and she didn't flash her badge either.

Chef - that sounds great. I'll have to Google that one. Never heard of it!
I walk past the entrances to a couple of the deep London ones most days. I think most people who walk past haven't a clue what's down there! The other day I took a picture of the last remaining entrance to Kingsway telephone exchange (Furnival St.). The door was locked...

No problem AWR, if you don't mind getting a bit muddy and definately smothered in chalk, aren't bothered by enclosed spaces and ain't built like a brick outhouse you'll love it.Attack Warning Red wrote:Chef - that sounds great. I'll have to Google that one. Never heard of it!

Done some 'bits and bobs' in London & Essex, mostly 'drains', hospitals and mental asylums, few tower cranes, Severals up by Colchester is a massive asylum, played hide & seek with the security there on many occasions
Love to do the deep shelters you speak of and the Kingsway, like bloody Fort Knox though.
And just to try and stay somewhere near the topic, I always carried my trusty Maglite.

For - AWR Re: Ramsgate Air Raid Shelter.
Managed to get my phone back today which has got 'some' pics of the shelter on it so here's a few to whet the appetite mate.
Collapsed entrance

Mate of mine slogging onward

Entrance to the air raid shelter proper from the 'wind tunnel' railway line

Further in one of the main connecting tunnels (these are about 7'x8' and were dug by pick axe)

I've blotted out my (C) as a location is one thing but a name is another entirely.
I'll see ya in the summer then.

Chef - that's awesome! You're a lucky guy. Frankly I don't think I have the balls to go somewhere like that, if there's a trespassing issue! I don't think the wife would be too happy with me getting arrested...
My greatest exploration 'claim to fame' was a solo visit to Paldiski, and abandoned Soviet military facility in Estonia. Mostly ruins, but an awesome place.
I recently got Duncan Campbell's 'War Plan UK'. He has a description and map of the London underground citadel - it's insane and covers so much of London, all the way from Horseferry Road to Chancery Lane and St. Pauls. Mental...

Re: Maglite accessories
Absolutely no chance of being arrested down there mate, trespass is a civil 'offence', all a police officer (or anyone else for that matter) can ask you to do is leave. (There are exceptions such as railway property, MOD property and a few others). The sites we visit are mostly on public or privately owned land which doesn't fall into any of those categories, although I have done an army base, quite a few military bunkers and a MOD/Nato listening station, a few abandoned train tunnels, a police station & a prison.Attack Warning Red wrote:Chef - that's awesome! Chef is green with envy at the thought of exploring some of the old Soviet facilities, Chernobyl and Pripyat and Stalins' Metro 2 or 'D6' are way up there on my 'to do' list.
Well the offer's open mate, be happy to show you some underground stuff any time, done a couple of those didy lil ROC posts round here too, bit cramped for a BOL imho but fun if they're in good nick.
