Re: Weapons - Hunting & Defence
I've been looking at some crossbow online tonight, quite a confusing array of types and features.
Can anyone recommend a compact or maybe 'pistol' (as I think the small ones are called) around or under £100 that's easy to load and use? I think a little recreational target shooting in a friend's bit of woodland might be nice.

There are good reasons Jansman asked for Mods help, simularly why I said read the old threads, "become more predatory or just go feral without worrying too much about protecting others" "checking out farms" you may not realize when you first come out with stuff like that, that you are sounding an awful lot like the part of the SHTF everyone else wishes to aviod, when I say you I mean any one of us who gets a bit carried away, in times of peace we have laws, some which have had to go OTT in banning and nannying us, largely because some of us need it, it must partially be a moral/family/community values thing, lost over time and aided by a shift away from preparedness and local interaction, brought about by the modern way of doing things, we are part of a soceity yes sure but on a local level, we know and trust few people and see everyone as a threat not a neighbour, there's a very real danger of people getting hurt in life pre the may never happen SHTF scenarios we talk about, remember for the most part we are prepping for hard times here not the

I like Archery, Shooting, but I am never going to be a danger to anything other than a paper target or a clay pigeon,if times change should I wish to hunt, now or even if TSHTF I would be seeking the permission of the landowner first, or offering labour etc in exchange for food, I suppose what I am trying to say here is I am trying to look for ways to get through hard times, which entails looking at how to be a part of the solution, not winding myself and others up into being part of the problem, does that hit the spot Mods?
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Do a search for crossbow and you will find there have been plenty of discussions about different types and with recommendations.24942895 wrote:I've been looking at some crossbow online tonight, quite a confusing array of types and features.

Well put plymtom, thank you for bringing it back to reality!!!
I do have a feeling that sometimes people don't read the posts that have been written as they are hell bent on discussing what they want to without any regard to the rules of the forum!

This is what you're looking for http://www.bladesandbows.co.uk/armex-to ... 2143-p.asp. It gets very good reviews and it's very good value. Mine should be arriving Monday or Tuesday so I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.24942895 wrote:I've been looking at some crossbow online tonight, quite a confusing array of types and features.

In an ideal world that's how we'd all like it but I do think some people are burying their heads in the sand here. Some of the comments you quoted are a great example of how some people will think and behave, whether we like it or not. The worst thing anyone can do is to ignore that fact and hope that things will be all cuddly and cosy when the SHTF. If it got really bad (people starting to starve) then I fully expect it to get very dangerous, at the very least you need to be able to defend what's yours, especially if you've had the nous to plan ahead.Plymtom wrote:There are good reasons Jansman asked for Mods help, simularly why I said read the old threads, "become more predatory or just go feral without worrying too much about protecting others" "checking out farms" you may not realize when you first come out with stuff like that, that you are sounding an awful lot like the part of the SHTF everyone else wishes to aviod, when I say you I mean any one of us who gets a bit carried away, in times of peace we have laws, some which have had to go OTT in banning and nannying us, largely because some of us need it, it must partially be a moral/family/community values thing, lost over time and aided by a shift away from preparedness and local interaction, brought about by the modern way of doing things, we are part of a soceity yes sure but on a local level, we know and trust few people and see everyone as a threat not a neighbour, there's a very real danger of people getting hurt in life pre the may never happen SHTF scenarios we talk about, remember for the most part we are prepping for hard times here not the![]()

Of course it all depends on the severity of the problem but personally I plan for the worst case and hope it will never be that bad.
I think there is a danger of stifling debate because people don't really want to hear the truth. I've seen the best and worst of people, and much like love and hate, there's a very fine line between the two.
Now we can all avoid talking about weapons and defending ourselves but the reality is that this is an extremely likely scenario, so in the interests of balance, and within the forum rules, I ask that we give some consideration to it's importance and a wider range of views. Stifling the debate isn't going to help anybody (as long as it's within the forum guidelines).

There is no area within the forum rules to discuss the use of weapons for personal defence, it is as simple as that. Now we can all avoid talking about weapons and defending ourselves but the reality is that this is an extremely likely scenario, so in the interests of balance, and within the forum rules, I ask that we give some consideration to it's importance and a wider range of views. Best drop any idea of doing so, simple as that.

For many on here the shtf is losing their job, ill health or bad weather preventing them going out, Rising food and fuel prices are all things we build our 'insurance' against.
If you are planning for a full blown societal breakdown with no law and order then I summise you will be waiting a very long time.
You say defending yourself is an extremely likely scenario - can you show credible evidence that this will be the case in the UK? What evidence do you see now that this will happen.? You say it is the truth but you offer nothing to show this will be the case - it is purely your opinion.
You say we don't want to hear the truth but we have all experienced our own shtf and that is why we are here, doing the best for our family.
Discussing self defence using weapons on this forum is against the forum rules. To that end if you wish to discuss it any further please do so via PM and I am now locking this thread!
