Oh, and some celox impregnated field dressings, tourniquets and several dozen trauma kits would be a good idea too.And a scarf, you won't want to catch a chill either.
If I escaped to the country, it would be to add my weight and help those already there deal with the *&^kers coming to demand and take from those who have always chosen to live and work (usually hard) the country life, not all townies think you country folk or your land are there for the taking, you feed us in the here and now in exchange for financial reward, in a world without oil and many other things you guys would need those of us willing to pull our weight to maintain production, those of us who couldn't cover ground could still be useful (and I am talking about disabled folk) keeping watch ( or reloading) or whatever roles need filling, new friends just when you need them
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I'm of the opinion that many would stay in the cities, the area they know. I think in a shtf situation many would be too scared to venture to far afield, especially if they did not know what might be out there.
I also agree that many do not have the skills to determine what would be good to eat once they get to the countryside. Another reason our growing areas should not be straight rows but should look like a mess (a productive mess but only we know that!)
I personally wouldn't classified 12 miles away from a big town like Milton Keynes as "in the country" - you may be surrounded by countryside, but 12 miles is a easy walk for anyone determined to get food for their family. And lets face it - every single person who actually survives the "major event" will be looking to get out of the towns / cities and into a more rural environment, so I would expect swarms of people to flood through your little village on the way to where ever they are going.
It appears that the members in more rural areas have the idea that they would be in a "safer" position should shtf , and that those in a semi rural position seem to think that creeping around the rural folk gets them a position in that "safer" place , and that townies are marauding <*$kers that just want to take occupation of this " safer " place.
Thats quite a presumptous and dangerous philosophy

It might be influenced by popular literature and television in all fairness. I cite "Threads", "Survivors", "The Walking Dead" and "28 Days Later" as examples of where this might have come from.
