I won’t go into too much detail but Mrs Briggs and I have decided it will be best if we go immediately to the refugee camp so we can get a good spot. We figure it’s going to be a lot less hassle in the long run and easier than trying to eek out a miserable existence along the lines of The Book of Eli/Red Dawn/28 Days Later. Mrs Briggs also added that the refugee camp would probably have Sky Movies.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I should apologise, I'm going through a Jack Daniels induced moment. I've been on another thread saying I bought some of the armour developed by that Doomsday marauder and I've hooked in a few there as well.

In all seriousness to the original topic my first option is 3, but I anticipate that my neighbours plus potential drifters into my home location will make bugging out to our BOL very difficult. By the time we open the garage door and fire up the BOV, we'll have a crowd waiting looking for a lift or supplies.

It's then six miles by road, only fifteen minutes but we'd be lucky to get there in the BOV. I plan for the single lane country roads to be choked with traffic and all junctions and crossroads, even deep country ones, will be potential choke points and trap hazards. Our six mile journey will soon be on foot and then we'd be forced into an off-road route which I have sort of planned out to avoid all potential choke points. Six miles on road is now closer to twelve off-road. Twelve miles, cross-country, taking care to avoid attention will take two probably three days. By that time, our odds of getting to the BOL as we planned will be drastically reduced.

My first choke point will be a minor crossroads about two miles from a major A road. One route leads from the A road and this is crossed by a B road which links two small villages. I would anticipate traffic and people escaping the A road to be congregated here because it's a natural place to stop and get your bearings and to make plans. There is a farmhouse and some outbuildings close by which would be a beacon to people on the road. I have a route that circumvents this crossroad but it's a mix of open moorland and dense wood - hardly ideal terrain on foot and we would have to ditch the BOV.

The next choke point is a real challenge. Crossing a major A road that will be the main route for people heading west to the coast. a mile on either side of this crossroad are B roads leading off and I anticipate these will be chocked full of traffic and people milling about and/or people trying to exit the A road thinking the countryside is safer. So the A road junction would have to be circumvented by at least three miles also but the question is how and where. the bridges are out, I may as well put a flashing beacon on my head.

Then, if we do make it across the A road, there's a chance someone else will have over-run it and now it's down to negotiation and ultimately force.

This is one of the scenarios I enjoy planning out in my head and in practice. I aim to choose 3, but I'll soon be forced into other options. There's no simple answer, the only solution is to be adaptable.

Devonian, a great thread, I apologise if my earlier post strayed everyone off topic. Hopefully I've brought it back and opened up some questions in people's plans.

Briggs.

Hi Briggs

No apologies needed, like you say its an interesting thread to see what others are thinking and how plans may differ to how you see things yourself.

Ultimately I think that a lot will depend on just how long you are able to Bug In for - do you go early before the rest of the population start hitting the road, and then risk being stuck at your BOL when you could have stayed at home and potentially remained there indefinitely!

Or do you follow the herd - No!

Or do you stay behind until after most have left with the hope of there being fewer people around and less traffic issues etc (obviously if a Tsunami is heading towards you, you won't be waiting around!)

I'm really stuck on this one. I have no BOL. At all. Are you all looking at a BOL you own or a BOL just to rendezvous at? I don't get it.
In my mind a BOL is a secondary location to home that provides sustainable shelter for an extended period of time. Like a bunker or a cottage or hut deep in the country.
Outside of popping to the nearest woods where I imagine hundreds, if not thousands will be going, I can't think why I'd want to do that. Er. Unless my home was under threat but then aren't I just running away somewhere?
