I suppose I'm lucky living here, we have mains gas but some places use LPG in bulk tanks, some use Propane 'bottles', some use oil and a few are still on solid fuels..... Theres always someone you can 'borrow' some boiling water from

Mains gas but a crappy Combi boiler. So no 'leccy = no gas anyway

Many in the US have backup electrical generators for the residence and those are powered by very, very large propane tanks on the property. Used judiciously, it could give you months of electrical power.
