I went out to recce a local possible bug out location. I'd identified a spot from the maps, but it's not looking promising if I'm honest. Very overgrown with brambles and I couldn't get far enough in away from the path without getting ripped to pieces. I'd need a machete to get much further and leaving a big trail sort of defeats the point.
I also got totally covered in mud, I've never seen the ground so boggy there.
What preps are you doing this week? Part 3.

Just put up some of the Onions I dehydrated. I have enough for another load to fill the dehydrator.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain~anon

Trying to add voluntary contributions to my NI.
What a nightmare.....

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I've been adding further supplies to the food and water store and re-stocking my First Aid Kit. I recently refreshed my basic First Aid training too. I've also been filling my Maxpedition Fatty to use as my EDC. It's full of pretty basic stuff really and won't hold as much as I would like, but big enough to take with me pretty much anywhere I go. Now saving up for something bigger to use as a GHB and the kit to fill it which will be stashed in the car. My son bought me a jerry can last week which will be filled with diesel and rotated into the truck every couple of months.
Growing old disgracefully!

Had a nice (not) service bill on car, so no more prep purchases until payday.
Hopefully stock up on more dried foods etc in March.
Up in the wet South Lakeland

Vehicle maintenance and repair is part of prepping too. You took care of something that might have left you or a loved one walking in a crisis or standing on the roadside as bait for some predator.DustyDog wrote:Had a nice (not) service bill on car, so no more prep purchases until payday.Hopefully stock up on more dried foods etc in March.

never mind all the scare stories of nutters hard shoulders or the side of a main road are not the safest of places to be stopped

(came across a BMW yesterday who had come off the road and managed to put a temporary fire service slippery road surface sign through his radiator ... From behind.. having passed One fixed permanent sign as he approached the bend
he then passed another temporary one which was wooden staked to the verge put there by the fire service after a car lost it on the same bend last week ... only to loose it dispite 2 warning signs of slippery roads ( i tend to take notice more of the tempory signs as they usually point to diesel / coolent / oil on the road following a crash....)
he had crossed the road and smash the temporary one down warning traffic coming the other way luckally not taking any other cars out..
Im just glad i was raised by a practical father and had the chance to work along side mechanics/ fitters ive spend the past few weeks prepping mrs andy's new to her 2002 car... only a £400 run about but erm its needed a fair bit of work but a common car = cheap as chips parts full service cost me about £50-£60 in bits (oil / oil filter/ spark plugs/ air filter/ bottle of red-x / gear box oil/ coolant) no need for cam belt yet.. it had 4 new tyres on it when she bought it ..
i needed to rehang the newly fitted exhaust as which ever fast fit monkey did it left it missing 2 of its hangers and leaking from a flange...
just on with rebuilding the rear brakes as the shoes are past it and the drums well lipped so £20 for the shoes and £40 for a pair of new drums... already had new front discs and pads... but the local motorsave gave me the wrong shoes and so new correct ones will be here tomorrow
mounted a fire extinguisher in the passenger foot well yesterday
biggest expense has been the new welder
A) saves me money for £80 a patch and im already paid off the welder and wire would have been £240 for this person to do it
B) lets me earn a bit of something be it beer/ trade or a few quid
so i see it as a worthy investment as i can weld just didnt have my own kit bar a £30 lidl arc welder which is no good for thin steel ..
been out for the day walking and hit snow
Cars seem to be one "prep" people overlook and as long as it starts when they turn the key they are happy
servicing comes well up the list for me (sat here knowing that when the weather gets better im replacing the front discs and pads on mine as they are getting thin...) when it gets its "6 monthly service"
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong

Re: What preps are you doing this week? Part 3.
This weekend I did a few things:
Following on from Yorkshire Andy's post on cars, I found a good deal on some oil and air filters so bought 5 of each to cover the next few services.
Topped up the screen wash and added a couple of new cans of de-icer to the car kits
Ordered a couple of big jars of molasses for the store cupboard. (home made BBQ sauce etc used in pasta bakes or homemade BBQ baked beans)
Zeroed my new deer rifle and ordered some dies for the calibre so I can reload the ammunition. A lot cheapoer in the long run and you dont have to rely on a shop having them in stock or being open.
Built a new portable HF long wire antenna and Balun for my radio kit.
Also started planning the vegies that need to be planted for the year.

What calibre rifle is your new one HBP ?
Mine is .270 which I need to re zero now after the addition of a sound moderator a few weeks ago
I have an accurate round which I re load so should only be a case of adjusting the point of impact
