I'm gonna have to power down on the everyday preps for a bit over the next few months, I am trying to save as much money as possible, 'just in case' there are any redundancies at work this year. To my knowledge there have NEVER been any compulsary redundancies where I work - but there's always a first time. :( And it's something that gives me sleepless nights - being jobless and penniless, so I'm trying to get as much money together as possible. Hello lockdown and bye bye social life.

Better not compound that Wolf - might be rampant

Lets be quite clear - The guvernmunt want you to believe that everything is on the up, and all figures issued will be spun to reflect that. Its done like that so as to ensure that those who are out of work feel that is their problem, and those in work have no need to be concerned about those that aren't - suppress dissent by division.
The construction of the inflation figures do not reflect the cost of a living human on a weekly basis - at all. Its not about cost either - inflation is as much about quantity too, same price smaller packet.

I quite agree, whichever way to choose to look at things your money buys you less

I was meaning the Daily Mail, but as mentioned the real rate is much different to the headline figures.

4% is the headline figure, but in reality it can be very different on individual items, my daily red top was 20p not too long ago, it is now 25p, so a 25% increase and if you took out all the crud, especially the back 6 pages of sport and the advertising and the gossip pages etc etc then it isn't a "News paper" at all

Mrs Gnole likes reading the Daily Mail  , finds it interesting  , but like any other paper they only print what stories they know their readers like to read.

I know that it is going to get tougher as time goes on, but it is up to the individuals (us, we, me and thee) how and where we cut back, it isn't going to help the situation whinging and whining about it as so many seem to be doing, it is time to get the figures sorted for our own personal situations, I can get a lot more cash in the bank just by paying my £30 a month mortgage instead of the £250 I am currently paying, we could stop having our little treats each weekend and just have a cup of coffee when we get home, we could do proper meal plans instead of just diving in the freezer and seeing what comes out. We saved 25% off our leccy bill by changing to CFL lamps and switching them off when not it use.

No point using "blame culture" it doesn't resolve the situation, though it does sometimes help to have a vent :D

Just had a look at the figures http://www.rateinflation.com/inflation- ... ?form=ukir for 20 years ago, 7.5% for the year, I guess we have fallen into the low rates trap over the last 20 years then as soon as we see a wee bit of a rise we all gasp with amasement :o

Personally I don't get angry for myself - I have already trimmed outgoings to the bone, cut our elect by 40%, food bills by 50%, and am retired so out of the rat race. But I get angry for all the other wee people who maybe aren't as eloquent or inventive or lucky as I am. All the perfectly genuine ordinary people scraping along on the minimum wage, or unable to get work at all, who have dreams and hopes and visions every bit as valid as mine, who because they are out of a job or ill are made to feel like a sub-species. But that's where forums like this one and others like it, come in. We can help people help themselves, and I love that !

Sometimes you need to be careful about how much savings you have "IN" the bank, having it under the mattress is sometimes a viable option.

Food stores are a good insurance policy, but they don't pay the bills, but savings stamps do, so it might be worth getting some of those in for gas, electricity, shopping etc.

A secure place with two locks is also a good idea, no one person has two keys, no chance of "borrowing" then ;)
