I have a pair of Midland 42s, can use it with a battery pack of 6 batteries (AA) or a rechargable pack, which is 8AA rechargables, or it can be used with an in-car kit, they are going for anything between £99 and £120.

It depends on wether, what antenna, frequency, power out, among other things. My VX6 has a stubby antenna fitted on it at the mo (so it fits in my pocket) and gets about 8-14 miles in cites on 5 Watts but I use repeaters for 2m/70cm and 4m. The Icom has a big whip antenna and gets about 18 to 25 miles in the city. The Clansman can go around the world with a long enough piece of wire and a balloon to get it in the air.
