As a bald headed man, I wear a baseball cap to keep the sun off. On Monday a hearse and mourners drove past as I was crossing the road. I took off my hat and bowed my head. My 20 something neighbour asked if I knew the deceased. She did not understand the traditional respect I was taught by my mother. :(

There is no respect any more everyone is in a mad rush.. saw a funeral cortege standing at a roundabout in town no one would let the hearse out so I put the full lighting show on of my works van and blocked the roundabout and let the full convoy out whilst some Nimb nuts sat on the horn behind

I've got this somewhere

If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

Take care of your feet, cut your toe nails correctly to prevent ingrowing toenails and if you cannot do it yourself get someone else to do it for you. Treat any cracked or dried skin on your heels and get any verrucas, fungal infections, bunions etc treated. Keep your feet clean and change your socks often especially if you have sweaty feet. Also wear supportive and correctly fitting footwear. For the last 30+ years I went barefoot 90% of the time, indoors, outdoors, at work, in the shops, in the street, in summer and quite a lot of winter not for any particular reason than I was more comfortable that way. Unfortunately it caught up with me and after lots of foot pain a podiatrist advised that the fat pad on the ball of my foot was none existent and that I have done quite a bit of damage over the years. I am now banned from being barefoot, although I still do on soft ground.

Elderberries are supposed to be very good for respiratory illnesses and a lot of the recipes for syrup have cinnamon in. I wondered about making elderberry whisky to make hot toddies with.

I use echinacea to boost my defences if there's a cold going round and zinc and Vit C if I do go down with a cold.

Interesting about ethnobotany. For too many years wisdom accumulated from centuries of observation has been dismissed as Old Wives Tales. Mostly because it was women who worked it out. Whereas observations by Victorian naturalists (men of independent means for the most part) were scientific.

And guess what? Science has proved that your mother's old wives' tale about keeping your throat warm and avoiding getting chilled does help stop you catching colds

I think for hundred or thousands of years mbbaltic, old wives were the only healthcare there was, so I would think their tales have substance

The venerable "Where there is no Doctor" book, which is designed to train village health workers for parts of the world still reliant on the local midwife/wise woman/cunning man, says that if a disease has loads of different remedies then probably none of them work. If everyone heads for the same remedy and it is not obviously nasty then it may well work.

We make lots of elderberry syrup for the cold and flu season. It seems to help. Elderberry does have some research to support it's antiviral status and it is soothing to take as a hot or cold drink or as a tablespoon every few hours. We also add lemon and honey as they blend well and help sooth any coughs.

Several years ago I studied a Herbal Medicine course in Bristol. The guy who ran it manages an apothecary there, he’s an absolute genius and I loved the course. Trying to grow a bit of a herbal garden too. I’m really glad that plenty of folk still make herbal remedies. Love the legend of The Four Thieves whose lives were spared in exchange for the recipe that kept them alive, a tincture of lavender, black pepper, rosemary and a couple of other herbs that increase immunity and inhibit pathogens, there are a few different recipes. Would really recommend everyone have some training in Herbal medicine or a couple of good books on the subject. First Aid from the inside out.

My wife is extremely interested in the topic. Chinese medicine too. I have several books for her birthday, along with her Über expensive favourite perfume!
