Totally agree with Yorkshire Andy and Jansman
I've been a prepper for a good 25 plus years
Its come in useful . When we have had power cuts ive had the equipment to be able to have light heating and food
Covid ..I had loo roll already in ..
When the lunatic next door tried to burn his and my house down..long enough hose to douse and fast evac plan
Mindset preparations the lot
Only because I am probably more aware than some and see it coming
What I never saw was the complete back turning of who I believed to be friends when I wasn't available for them ..
Its shocked even me and there's been a lot since Mr GG became ill ...
Only yesterday one who I have known for 30 years and helped a lot asked me via text ..can you spare a couple of hours please ..when I said no as Mr GG has had covid ..again ..and his cancer has spread all over so I wasn't leaving him for too long ..I got the reply..well I suppose I cant depend on you any more ..be best when hes gone you can have a life again ..take care..
Meaning I can run around for her
Wont tell you the answer but yes Andy and Jansman
Yours first and then maybe ..just maybe the ones who have been decent with you

Family comes first. One’s Tribe. After that, your neighbours ,then perhaps the rest of your community. A good example is my wife. She is a teacher. As a result of the situations she deals with, she helps at the local food bank. That’s good. However ,given the size now of our village population, she is one of few who helps. She has had to take time to look after and assist me with my hospital treatment for the last four months , and the food bank organisation has been rather rude to her because of her absence! As she put it to them- try advertising for more help then. They did. Folks want, but won’t give !
Sure,I am using our NHS to stay alive right now. As grenfell mentioned earlier, the NHS is a big deal community-wise. It is ! However,as I thanked a radiologist for my treatment one day and I commented on what important work she did ,she said, “ Yes it is important, but I won’t do it without being paid properly “. I heard that several times, and boy ,I’ve spent some time in hospitals in the last four + months.
So in an emergency,a real one, people whatever they do for a living, may well look out for their tribe first!
I know what my response to the food bank would be and it wouldn't be polite or diplomatic did the wife have to stop you popping down for a "chat"?

Hope your response was similar to my reply to Jansmans situation
Hope Mr G is as comfortable as possible and your looking after him and treating it as a full on man cold with lots of sympathy and brow dabs with a cool flannel

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
I guess everyone's been let down by friends. Doing jobs for friends often leads to falling out. I was on the point of giving up being self employed, due to problems with my knees. My friend of nearly 30 years asked me to do a repair job. They lived 20 miles away, further than most customers. So I wasn't really that keen but agreed to do it. He asked me how much I charged. I said £15 an hour, not much for a self employed person. He said "£15 an hour?!" as if it was unreasonable. I should have made my excuses there and then.
I replaced some tiles, but the bath was loose and I said he needed to get a plumber to sort that out. I don't fit baths. I'm not a plumber. He insisted I come out the 20 miles at 7 in the evening to try to sort the bath with him. He took the panel off and it was full of glass fibre, which I hate. He tried adjusting the feet but it was still loose. Obviously it needed fixing to the wall better, I knew that anyway. Then he got cross because I put my tool box on his carpet.
He never spoke to me again after that day.

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
Oh my god the entitlement and pigheadedness of people that our community members have come across! I don't have the kind of skills that you guys are offering out for free/mates rates, but I pay for jobs that I need doing. Mind you, a few years ago, a tradesman working on my wrought iron gate said, as I brought him a cuppa, "people don't treat workmen the way they used to". Something's definitely gone wrong
And GeeGee, for you in particular - what your "friend" texted you is shocking.

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
Several examples there, for sure. That’s why prepping has a “deep purpose “ - for yourself. Sad situation, but there it is…
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
Unless I'm mistaken and the original post expects us all to ride round in 4x4's loaded with tools and supplies the concept of a deeper purpose is much more subtle but is ultimately the continuation of society. It's in no one's interest for society to dissend into chaos and lawlessness and I would suggest that despite the stories of the ungrateful a lot on here do contribute to that deep purpose in small ways. A few tins of beans isn't going to save the world , neither is a few hours volunteering at a food bank or helping someone out with a car repair or advising them what veg to grow but as a probably too influential supermarket says "every little helps" . If it stops a child from getting ill or it stops a shoplifting it's still having a tiny impact on that deeper purpose. Even just simply building one's own resilience takes pressure off emergency services should something happen.
Course , saying all that there's a percentage of the population ( some at the top and some at the bottom) who frankly are undeserving of any sort of help and who I'd happily see die off....

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
This reminds me of a scene from Dr Who where he was escaping Pompei. As he was about to leap in the Tardis, his sidekick . Donna implored him to at least "Save someone". And so he saved one family. Just because we can't do everything, doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything.grenfell wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2023 9:08 am Unless I'm mistaken and the original post expects us all to ride round in 4x4's loaded with tools and supplies the concept of a deeper purpose is much more subtle but is ultimately the continuation of society. ...

I'm an amoral and oft selfish b****. But I've seen the contribution that foodbanks and charities can make. So, I now do my bit and it brings its own rewards. I've seen first hand the gratitude of some and the ingratitude of others. And it makes me think transactionally. Giving some time to a local charity, has put me in personal contact with useful people and organisations. It's one way of expanding our own community or gang. If a few undeserving people benefit, then so what ( and who's to judge)? So long as there is some net benefit. There will always be parasites wherever there are resources. But we all need resources... If it stops a child from getting ill or it stops a shoplifting it's still having a tiny impact on that deeper purpose. Even just simply building one's own resilience takes pressure off emergency services should something happen.

Graceful Degradation! Prepping's objective summed up in two words. Turning Disaster into Mild Inconvenience by the power of fore-thought

Re: The deep purpose for preppers
WOW....
OK.
So my original intent with this post was to highlight that preppers could be an asset to local populations in times of crisis.
This was meant to be my viewpoint only. Hoping that I might spark an ember of thought within the community here. Planting the ember of possibility where preppers look beyond the individual or family to the wider community. Where preppers begin to think about what value they can add to the community, after they secure thier and thier owns safety.
Look I get it.
Most dont think like I do. I have secured my preps for my family and friends. Then I began securing my preps to allow us to provide assistance to my community. Not to feed a community. But to help coordinate survival. To include a huge stock of medical supplies for mass casualty events.
Look. I am jaded here. My viewpoints were flamed by the US Forum because I stood by my values to help people. After huge amounts of abuse I quit the forum.
I came back here to what I believe to be a much more mature and reasoned community.
Nobody has to follow my views. I do hope that some of the prepper community is less selfish than the rest of the society.
Like I have said. Nobody has to follow my direction. I am happy in my direction in prepping alone.
OK.

I don't do politics or religion. Seen to many people die because of these.
I post to contribute so take as you see fit. My way is not the only way.
Cheers

We are not abusing you, nor are we selfish, but we are mature and reasoned! We are also British. Sadly, a nation dominated by social media these days. It seems to make folks selfish.sfcfinchrs wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2023 4:56 pm WOW....

Community is just that now- selfish . I know members here are similar to me, and will help others. However, the folks who require, indeed expect help, NEVER help anyone else either. In a real crisis it’s look after number one and tribe.
